Until the church is planted

Seeshaupt is said to have been mentioned for the first time in 740. Until the secularization in 1803, the inhabitants of Seeshaupt were mostly dependent on the surrounding monasteries: Polling , Bernried , Benediktbeuern , Beuerberg and Habach . Seeshaupt belonged to the Munich Rent Office and to the Weilheim district court of the Electorate of Bavaria .

On March 31, 1815, a devastating fire broke out in the village, which killed 29 of the 42 existing properties at the time. The roof of the church and the bell tower also burned out, and the Bernried fire brigade was able to prevent it from burning completely with a fire engine. The reconstruction took place in the same year according to progressive plans of the royal Bavarian construction officer Gustav Vorherr . The straight layout of streets, gardens and buildings was rewarded with prizes.

In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , the municipality of Seeshaupt, which belonged to the Weilheim district court , was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

Second World War and consequences

Towards the end of the Second World War on April 30, 1945, a train evacuation transport from the Dachau subcamp Mühldorf with 3,000 concentration camp prisoners came to a halt in the village , who were liberated by US troops . 92 of them died from the abuse they suffered and were buried in the village. On April 30, 1995, 50 years later, a memorial was erected on Bahnhofstrasse. Every year on April 30th there is a memorial service. The dead, initially buried on site, were reburied in Dachau in 1955 and 1956.

Incorporations

On April 1, 1938, areas of the dissolved municipality of Arnried were incorporated with the municipalities of Ellmann, Hohenberg, Kronleiten, Pollingsried and Wolfetsried. During the municipal reform on May 1, 1978, the formerly independent municipality of Magnetsried was incorporated.

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 2,565 to 3,257 by 692 inhabitants or by 27%.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was awarded on March 19, 1951 by the State Ministry of the Interior .

Blazon

In blue a silver fish lying at an angle.

Coat of arms history

The fish symbolizes the location of the community on Lake Starnberg and the importance of fishing as an important industry in earlier times. The 1520 as provost of the to 1535 Monastery Bernried acting Johannes Tutzinger led a fish in his personal coat of arms that on a late Gothic still stone sculpture is the so-called Seeger Maybe column of 1522 to find in Seeshaupt at the dock. It remains unclear whether this is a landmark of the Starnberg Maritime Court or the former maritime border. The tinging in blue and silver is suitable for lake and fish and at the same time alludes to the Bavarian national colors.
