Steingaden is a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau and the seat of the Steingaden administrative community . Steingaden is a state-approved resort.
The community is home to two unique monuments, the famous Wieskirche and the Welfenmünster .
geography
Steingaden is located in the foothills of the Alps on the border between Upper Bavaria and the Allgäu . The nearest larger cities are Füssen 19 km southwest, Kaufbeuren 27 and Garmisch-Partenkirchen 29 km away (as the crow flies).
The Illach crosses the municipality in an east-west direction. In Steingaden, some brooks unite to form the Neuhauser Bach, which flows into the Illach about 2 km further north. This in turn flows to the Lech reservoir Urspring in the far west of the municipality and thus to the Lech . The bathing lake Bismarckweiher is located on the northern outskirts.

history
The place Steingaden belonged to the closed Hofmark of 1147 of Welf VI. founded the Premonstratensian Monastery of Steingaden , which was closed in 1803 in the course of secularization . The surrounding towns of Fronreiten, Lauterbach and Urspring, which used to belong largely to the monastery, became independent political communities in the course of the administrative reforms in the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1818. The place Steingaden belonged to the community of Urspring.
Fronreit, Lauterbach and Urspring were combined on April 1, 1939 to form the municipality of Steingaden. In the course of the municipal reform , Steingaden merged with surrounding municipalities on May 1, 1978 to form the Steingaden administrative community.
Population development
Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 2,461 to 2,905 by 444 inhabitants or 18%.

politics
In the local elections on March 16, 2014 , the CSU / Independent Voters / Non-Party Voters list got ten seats in the local council with a share of 70.7% of the votes, the women's list four seats (29.3% of the votes).
Xaver Wörle has been mayor since 1996. He was confirmed in office in the 2014 local elections with 83.5% of the valid votes.

Buildings
- The Wieskirche , the pilgrimage church "To the Scourged Savior on the Wies" . The work of the brothers Dominikus and Johann Baptist Zimmermann was built between 1746 and 1754 in the purest rococo style and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

music
Church music in the Welfenmünster: The design of the liturgy is essentially the responsibility of the Steingaden church choir and the Schola. The choir consists of about 60 members. The music literature ranges from Gregorian chant to motets, chorales and orchestral masses to the new sacred song. The choir also took part in the large open-air performances “Welfs Erbe” and “Wunder Wies”.
Every year from May to September the “Festlicher Sommer”, “Evening Concerts” and “Music in the Pfaffenwinkel” concert series are held in the Wieskirche.

Tourism plays a major role in the economy of the agricultural community.

The municipality and the relatively centrally located main town are crossed by federal road 17 in a north-south direction . This is crossed by State Road 2059 in Steingaden . The German Alpine Road extends from the south on the B 17 and leaves Steingaden on the St 2059 east towards Oberammergau .
