Riesen is a district of the municipality of Steingaden in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau . The predominantly agricultural village lies on the Romantic Road between the communities of Steingaden and Peiting and can be traced back to an old rafting settlement.

geography

The village, laid out as a scattered settlement , is about 5–6 km north of Steingaden. It extends over a wide area that borders in the west on the Steingaden district of Hirschau and the Lech with the Litzau loop and in the east on the two Peitingen districts of Grub and Deutenried. It is surrounded by four popular bathing lakes - the Grubsee in the northeast, the Deutensee in the east, which is particularly popular with anglers who organize an annual fishing festival here, and the Doldensee in the southwest, which is visited as a moor lake mainly for its healing properties , and the Riesener See in the area of the village.

The wide meadows, which are mostly used for agricultural purposes today (especially as pastures for cattle), were mainly created by clearing forests in the past centuries, so that with the exception of the high banks of the Lech there are only a few forest areas in giants. It is these banks of the Lech that once gave the place its role as a rafting settlement , as tree trunks could be guided particularly effectively into the river Lech, which first flows in the direction of Landsberg am Lech and then in the direction of Augsburg .

history

In the course of the administrative reforms in the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1818, Riesen became a district of the newly founded Lauterbach community in the Schongau district court . In 1939 this merged with two neighboring communities to form the Steingaden community.

Origin of name

The term giant is derived from the name Ries or giant , which describes the slides that raftsmen once used to transport large logs from great heights into the valley, here in the Lech.

Culture and sights

The Litzau Loop in the northwest of Giant, which is one of the few remaining natural courses of the Lech, is another popular hiking destination for tourists. A great variety of plant and animal species can be found here.

In the list of architectural monuments in Steingaden , two architectural monuments are listed for giants :

  • The chapel (Oberfeld) was built in 1868.
  • The wooden chapel (Riesen 18a) dates from the end of the 17th century.
