The Illach is an almost 23 km long tributary of the Lech in Upper Bavaria with a catchment area of around 40 km².
It is fed by a series of spring streams on the northern slope of the Hochwildfeuerberg in the Trauchberg massif ( Ammergau Alps ), the most important of which has its source at an altitude of about 1,260 m and is called the Markbächl . In the upper reaches, the Illach flows mainly in a northerly direction through the area of the municipalities of Wildsteig and Rottenbuch , turns to the west at the Rottenbuch district of Rudersau and finally reaches the Lech directly below Lech barrage 3 at Urspring (municipality of Steingaden ) . Their runoff behavior varies between a runoff of 1 m³ / s ( low water ) and 60 m³ / s ( high water ). These fluctuations are related to pre-alpine precipitation .
