Monastery museum in the rectory

The monastery museum in the rectory is a church and local history museum in the municipality of Steingaden in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau .

The Steingaden Monastery was founded in 1147 by Margrave Welf VI. , Son of Duke Heinrich IX. founded by Bavaria , as a Premonstratensian choir monastery and as a house monastery and burial place of the Guelphs.

In the monastery museum in the rectory, housed in the apothecary wing of the Canons' Monastery, directly adjoining the Welfenmünster , a collection with exhibits from all epochs of the 650-year history of the monastery in Steingaden can be seen. The themes of the exhibition include a. the history of the Guelphs , the Crusades , the construction history of the monastery, the effects of secularization in Bavaria on the monastery and the town of Steingaden as well as paintings and sculptures from the former monastery property.

The monastery museum in the rectory is open every Thursday afternoon from April to September. Special tours are available on request from the Steingaden Tourist Information Office.
