history

The first documentary mention comes from the years 1281/82, when Count Palatine Friedrich von Scheyern Wittelsbach donated a farm in "Pozzenhofen" to the Schäftlarn monastery as well as other possessions .

In 1536 the landscape chancellor Jacob Rosenbusch built the Possenhofen Castle named after the place . In 1538 he received ownership rights for the village of Possenhofen and in 1545 for the village of Pöcking from the Bavarian dukes. After several other owners, most recently Count Basselet von la Rosée , the castle and the two court brands finally came into the possession of Duke Maximilian Joseph in Bavaria in 1834 . His daughter Elisabeth, who later became Empress Elisabeth of Austria and Queen of Hungary (Sisi), spent her childhood here.

King Maximilian II had a train station built in Possenhofen on the Munich – Garmisch-Partenkirchen railway line for the high nobility (now an S-Bahn station). The museum in the Königssalon (Heinemann collection) and the Kaiserin Elisabeth Museum have been located here since 2004 . It is open in the summer months from Friday to Sunday (afternoons).

There is a youth hostel in Possenhofen .

Possenhofen has a landing stage for the Bayerische Seenschifffahrt .
