Seewiesen is the seat of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology on the Eßsee , district Aschering , today part of the municipality of Pöcking in Upper Bavaria ; located between Lake Starnberg and Lake Ammersee , around 40 kilometers southwest of Munich .

The founding directors Erich von Holst and Konrad Lorenz chose the name Seewiesen for the Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Physiology, which was built in the open from 1955 on the suggestion of Wolfgang Schleidt, based on the structure of the surrounding area. Later they occasionally regretted this choice, as the place name repeatedly led to confusion with other places of the same name . The official inauguration of the facilities was carried out in 1958 by Nobel Prize winner Otto Hahn . The institute premises are 30 hectares, 8 hectares of which are lake ( Eßsee ).

The MPI for Behavioral Physiology was closed in 1999, after which the facility was initially continued as the Max Planck Research Center for Ornithology . In 2004, with the appointment of two directors, Bart Kempenaers and Manfred Gahr , the research center became the institute again, the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology . The Radolfzell Vogelwarte in Radolfzell - Möggingen was a part of the institute until 2019 and has been an independent Max Planck Institute for Animal Behavior ever since.
