The Eßsee (pronounced: Ess-See) is a pear-shaped moor pond near Aschering , a district of the municipality of Pöcking in Upper Bavaria, Germany. The site of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology Seewiesen, founded in 2004, is located on the northeast bank . From 1958 to 1999 the Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Physiology was located on the site , and from 1999 to 2004 the Max Planck Research Center for Ornithology.

The lake is a relic of the Würm Ice Age and was created by the accumulation of water in a tub when the glaciers retreated. It used to be larger, but the lake area has now shrunk to around 8 hectares due to siltation and bog.

Until well into the 20th century, the Eßsee was a nutrient-poor lake, in which plants growing in the lake formed a floating plant cover (swing ceiling moor) at several points on the shore, which was home to a special world of species, especially for rare moorland dragonflies or orchids. Since the conditions had deteriorated considerably in the meantime, around 18,000 m³ of sludge were sucked out of the lake in 2010 and 2011 on behalf of the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment, Health and Consumer Protection for around one million euros in order to rehabilitate the lake.
