Bart Kempenaers (born June 4, 1967 in Heist-op-den-Berg ) is a Belgian biologist and ornithologist . He is a professor at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and director at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Seewiesen .

Life

In 1989 he completed his biology studies at the University of Limburg and the University of Antwerp . In 1994 he received his PhD from the University of Antwerp. This was followed by post-doctoral positions at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology and at Queen's University in Canada (1995) as well as a position at the Konrad Lorenz Institute for Comparative Behavioral Research in Vienna . In 1999 Kempenaers became head of a research group in Seewiesen and in 2003 he became the founding director of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Seewiesen and has been an honorary professor at the LMU Munich since 2004 . In 2009 he received the New Zealand Julius von Haast Fellowship Award .

Kempenaers researches the evolution of partner choice, partner loyalty and parental brood care in birds. His department investigates why individuals differ in their mating behavior and how this affects their reproductive success and their chances of survival.
