The Iffeldorfer Holy Grave

The Holy Sepulcher of Iffeldorf is a holy grave made in the early Art Nouveau style between 1894 and 1895 , which is erected every year during Holy Week in the parish church of St. Vitus in Iffeldorf .

history

The holy grave was made between 1894 and 1895 by the Zbitek company from Neustift in the Sudetenland and acquired in 1895 by the parish of Iffeldorf for 1,000 gold marks . This is reported by a copy of a certificate with the following wording:

" Testimony.
St. Grave made of glass mosaic, which Mr. Emil Zbitek delivered in Neustift near Olomouc for the local parish church, evokes the impression of a completed work of art not only among the common people, but also among art connoisseurs, and the whole parish praises itself as happy that it is thanks to the generosity of some Benefactor in the possession of such a St. The grave has come, the sight of which drew tears of joy and emotion even from men, which makes devotion like no other kind of holy. Graves.
It's surprisingly easy to set up and take down, and just as convenient to store.
The lighting by kerosene lamps is splendid and there was absolutely no unpleasant smell in our small church. Most people found the price so low that they couldn't understand how one could deliver such a wonderful work of art for so little money.
Mr. Zbitek can therefore be highly recommended to every pastor who wants to make himself and his parish happy for the char week.

This replica of the tomb of Christ is not an individual work of art, but catalog item. The company sent church and liturgy supplies, the client could have minor changes made. The manufacture for transparent glass mosaics was founded in 1846 by Eduard Zbitek. In 1885 his son Emil replaced him in the company management. Products from the Zbitek company enjoyed great popularity beyond the countries of the Austrian monarchy . Of the approx. 900 to 1000 graves made in this way up to the closure of the company in 1922, only a few still exist today; at least eight of them are still being built, four of them in Bavaria ( Darshofen , Rommelsried , Zusamzell , Iffeldorf).

Until the early 1970s, the Holy Sepulcher Altar was regularly set up for the Good Friday liturgy in the parish church. After the Second Vatican Council , many liturgical customs were gradually abandoned and forgotten, including the Holy Sepulcher in Iffeldorf. It was placed in the attic of the parish and youth home, where it was rediscovered in 2005 when the building was demolished. It was then professionally restored and electrical lighting was installed. It has been set up again every year since 2008.

The two-storey historicist complex in transition to Art Nouveau was originally illuminated by 30 kerosene lamps. These were located behind cardboard boxes about three millimeters thick, which are mounted on wooden frames. Openings are punched into these cardboard boxes, into which colorful, hand-cut glass stones are inserted and fastened with thin wires or threads. For a better effect and to remember the darkness at the crucifixion of Jesus ( Mk 15.33  EU ), the church windows are darkened with black curtains as long as the Holy Sepulcher is built.

The transfigured cross is located above the cave with a representation of the body of Jesus . The cloth of the Descent from the Cross hangs over this . The sun shining from the cross is an indication of the hope that the resurrection of Jesus Christ gives. The box below the cross is a representation of the Ark of the Covenant from the Jerusalem temple , on which יהוה (Yahweh) is written. According to Jewish belief, Yahweh was invisible on this chest, which is why an angel kneels on the right and left. The ark as a representation of the old covenant is contrasted with the body of Jesus and the symbol of the new covenant .

Around the tomb there is a portico consisting of two Ionic columns and a transom. The first three letters IHS of the Greek name of Jesus are framed in flower ornaments on the two pillars . In the center of the crossbar is the inscription HIS TOMB WILL BE GORGEOUS ISAIAS CHAPTER XI. 10. EU . In the portico there are also symbols of the Passion: The cup of the Last Supper and a second cup of the agony of Jesus on the Mount of Olives could symbolize, praying as Jesus' Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. "( Mt 26.39  EU ). Furthermore, the tools of suffering hammer, nails, tongs, flagella and the dice with which the soldiers rolled around the robe of Jesus ( Jn 16 : 23-24  EU ) can be seen.

The Holy Sepulcher consists of over 27,000 glass mosaic stones, of which approx. 9,000 pieces form the guardians, around 8,000 form the portico and 10,000 form the inner area. The inner area consists of the flower vases with 4,000, the angels with 4,000 as well as the cross with cloth and rays made of around 2,000 glass stones. The ark is filled with about 370 stones.

Liturgical use

Originally the construction of the Holy Sepulcher took place after the Holy Thursday liturgy , after which the Eucharistic Body of Christ was transferred to the Holy Sepulcher and thus symbolically buried. On Good Friday the hours of prayer and the Good Friday liturgy were held with the veneration of the cross in front of the Holy Sepulcher. On Holy Saturday , after further prayer hours, the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ was celebrated. A painting of the corpse in the grave tipped over backwards or a cloth was pulled in front of the grave grotto and a figure of the resurrected one appeared above by means of a pulling device.

Today the Holy Sepulcher will be built in the afternoon of Palm Sunday and will remain there until the afternoon of Holy Saturday. The opening takes place with a concert by a local vocal ensemble.
