Johann Damascen von Kleimayrn

Johann Damascen von Kleimayrn OSB (also Johann Damaszen von Klei (e) nmayrn , until he was accepted into the order Johann Ferdinand Cajetan ; * October 19, 1735 in Zell am Ziller ; † May 25, 1810 in Landsberg am Lech ) was a German Benedictine priest , University professor and last abbot of the Wessobrunn monastery .

Life

Kleimayrn came from an originally Swabian family . He was one of the sons of Ferdinand Cajetan von Kleimayrn, a Salzburg nurse, district judge and provost in Zell am Ziller. His eldest brother was the Salzburg statesman Johann Franz Thaddäus von Kleimayrn . In 1750 he began studying philosophy at the University of Salzburg , but in 1751 he joined the Benedictine order and the Wessobrunn monastery . He then studied theology as part of the joint study program of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation . This was followed by further studies in the Benedictine Abbey of St. Paul in Rome and a stay in Naples . After his return in 1758 he was ordained a priest . Studies of canon law and civil law followed in Salzburg .

Kleimayrn received the professorship of canon law and moral theology in 1762 while studying together at the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation, and in 1767 that of exegesis and the Greek language. In 1770 he became pastor in Iffeldorf , and in 1772 superior of the Mission to Schwarzach . On November 3, 1773, he was at the University of Salzburg to Dr. jur. PhD .

Following his doctorate, Kleimayrn was appointed full professor of canon law at the university and was also awarded the title of clergyman . In the period up to 1788 he was dean of the law faculty three times . On January 21, 1788, he was elected Rector of the University of Salzburg and subsequently appointed to the High Princely Salzburg Privy Council . In 1792 he retired from both offices.

Kleimayrn went back to the Wessobrunn monastery and was elected abbot there on May 7, 1792 . As such, he had to experience the secularization of his monastery. After all, he lived in Landsberg am Lech for the last years of his life.
