In 2017, Müller played together with his wife in an episode of the early evening series Hubert and Staller (season 6, episode 14).

Club career

Youth and beginnings at FC Bayern Munich (until 2010)

Müller, who can be used both as a striker and in the attacking midfield , moved from TSV Pähl to the D-Jugend of FC Bayern Munich in 2000 , but initially continued to train mostly with his home club. At FC Bayern he went through all youth teams from now on. With the A-Jugend of Bayern, he became champion of the A-Junioren-Bundesliga Süd / Südwest in 2007 and second in the finals of the German A-Junior Championship , scoring one goal each in the semi-finals and in the final. In his second year in the top youth class, he scored 18 goals in 26 games. He was then used in the second team in the Regionalliga Süd . He made his debut there on March 7, 2008 and also scored a Joker goal .

At the beginning of the 2008/09 season in the newly founded nationwide 3rd division , Müller was taken over into the squad of the second team, but at the same time completed part of the preparation with the Bundesliga squad of coach Jürgen Klinsmann . He made his Bundesliga debut shortly afterwards on August 15, 2008 (1st matchday) in a 2-2 home game against Hamburger SV with a substitute for Miroslav Klose in the 80th minute. After that he played almost exclusively in the second team, for which he scored 15 goals in 32 games. Only towards the end of the season he came to three more substitutions in the first division team. In addition he gave on 10 March 2009 his debut in the Champions League when he at first knockout round second leg against Sporting Lisbon in the 72nd minute for Bastian Schweinsteiger came on two minutes later ushered in a goal and in the 90th minute the lead to 7: 1 final score scored.

In February 2009, Müller, who counts the German soccer player Gerd Müller as one of his role models, signed a professional contract valid from the beginning of the 2009/10 season and running until 2011. The new coach of FC Bayern, Louis van Gaal , took him on before the season began 2009/10 in his extended lineup. Müller came on as a substitute from the first day of the match. On September 12, 2009 he scored his first two Bundesliga goals in a 5-1 win in the away game against Borussia Dortmund and then moved up to the starting line-up. Three days later he made his debut in Bayern's starting line-up in the Champions League away game against Maccabi Haifa , where he also scored twice. On May 1, 2010 (33rd matchday), he scored all three goals in a 3-1 victory over VfL Bochum and thus brought about the preliminary decision for the 2010 championship. In addition to the German championship , he also won the DFB Cup with Bayern Munich and reached the final of the UEFA Champions League, which was lost 2-0 to Inter Milan . Müller became a regular player in his first Bundesliga season and with his 19 goals in 52 competitive games he played a part in the success of his team.

Regular players and the "runner-up" triple (2010–2012)

Despite a few offers from foreign clubs, Müller announced before the 2010/11 season that he wanted to stay with FC Bayern Munich for the long term. In his second full Bundesliga season, Müller was used in all 34 games of the season and scored 19 competitive goals again over the course of the season. Overall, the season was less successful for the record champions. The Bundesliga season ended in third place; The good results of the previous year could not be confirmed in the DFB-Pokal (semi-finals) and Champions League (elimination in the second round).

In the 2011/12 season he was also considered one of the most reliable players on the team under the new coach Jupp Heynckes . Although he was no longer in the front row and only came to a successful conclusion seven times (as well as twice in the Cup and Champions League), he continued to play an important role in the attacking midfield. On March 31, 2012, Müller completed his 100th Bundesliga appearance for Bayern Munich in the game against 1. FC Nürnberg . At the end of the season he had played for the third time in a row in all 34 games of the season and thus in 102 Bundesliga games in a row. In addition, he was used in all Champions League and DFB Cup games in three years with the exception of one group round game. However, the season remained untitled for FC Bayern Munich after finishing second in the Bundesliga and losing the cup final to Borussia Dortmund. In the Champions League, Müller was in his second final with Bayern Munich and scored the opening goal in the game against Chelsea . The final was ultimately lost on penalties, so that FC Bayern Munich finished the season with three second places.

Twice the triple and record eight championships in a row (since 2012)

Although Müller's uninterrupted streak of league appearances had ended early in the 2012/13 season and he was not used in a total of six season games, he came on 13 league goals at the end of the season. On matchday 28, he secured the Bundesliga championship with FC Bayern Munich earlier than ever before. On May 25, 2013, he and Bayern Munich won the UEFA Champions League final 2-1 against Borussia Dortmund at London's Wembley Stadium . He was Bayern's top scorer in the competition with eight goals and contributed three goals to his club's entry into the finals in the semi-finals against FC Barcelona , especially in the 7-0 ( two-way leg) . With victory in the DFB Cup final on June 1, 2013, Müller and FC Bayern became the first German soccer club to win the triple in men's soccer. Overall, he set a personal best with 23 competitive game goals, although he had less appearances than in the previous three seasons. Under the new coach Pep Guardiola , Müller was only used as a substitute more often in the 2013/14 season than in previous years, but he was able to further increase his goal rate. He scored a total of 26 competitive goals and helped improve the previous year's record for the earliest established championship in the Bundesliga. Müller scored eight goals in the DFB Cup, including the 2-0 goal in extra time in the cup final against Dortmund. In the Champions League, Bayern Munich failed to defend their title, but the team won two more titles in the final against Raja Casablanca, the UEFA Super Cup against Chelsea and the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup .

In the 2014/15 season , Müller won the German championship for the third time in a row with FC Bayern Munich. For the fourth time he reached his personal record of 13 league goals. He scored another eight goals in the Champions League and the DFB Cup, but failed with his team in both competitions in the semifinals. On the 6th match day of the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League season , Müller scored his 24th goal in the Champions League, replacing Mario Gómez (23 goals) as Bayern's most successful goalscorer in this competition. On April 21, 2015, he scored his 27th goal in the Champions League in the quarter-final second leg against FC Porto and thus also became the most successful German goalscorer in the competition, only Gerd Müller was initially even more successful with 34 goals in the previous competition, the European Champions Cup . For the 2015/16 season, Müller was named the third captain of FC Bayern after Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer . With the 4-0 home win against VfB Stuttgart on November 7, 2015, he achieved his 150th Bundesliga victory in the 209th Bundesliga game, making him the youngest player to score 150 Bundesliga wins after Georg Schwarzenbeck . No player in the Bundesliga needed as few games as he did. With a 4-0 home win against Olympiacos Piraeus on November 24, 2015, he became the youngest player to achieve his 50th victory in the UEFA Champions League. On March 16, 2016, Müller scored in the round of 16 in a 4-2 win against Juventus Turin in stoppage time to 2-2. This was his 35th goal in the Champions League, replacing Gerd Müller as the most successful German goal scorer in the highest European club competition. On April 19, 2016, Müller contributed two goals to the final in a 2-0 victory in the cup semi-final against Werder Bremen , scoring his 150th competitive goal in the 347th competitive game. On the penultimate game day, the fourth German championship in a row was made perfect; With his 20 goals this season in the Bundesliga, Müller set a new personal record. In the cup win on May 21, 2016 against Borussia Dortmund after 4: 3 on penalties, Müller converted the penalty to 3: 2 and won the double for the fourth time. In 2018 he won the German championship for the sixth time in a row . In 2018 and 2019 he won the German championship for the seventh and eighth time in a row with FC Bayern Munich .

At 1: 5 in Frankfurt on the 10th matchday of the 2019/20 Bundesliga season , the offensive player completed his 500th competitive game for the club and was only the tenth overall to succeed. By winning the ninth German championship in 2020, he set Franck Ribéry's record for most titles by one player. With 21 assists he beat Kevin De Bruyne's previous record with 20 assists in the 2019/20 season . By winning the cup on July 4, 2020 against Bayer 04 Leverkusen , he overtook Gerd Müller with 48 wins in the DFB Cup , making him the sole record holder in this competition. On August 14, 2020, Müller made his 113th appearance in the Champions League in the quarter-finals against FC Barcelona , overtaking Philipp Lahm and now holding the German record. On August 23, 2020 he won the Champions League for the second time and thus the triple again after 2013 .

His contract with FC Bayern Munich runs until 2023.

National team

Junior selection

For the first time for a German junior team, Thomas Müller played in the U16 ; He was used there six times. After that he was only called up irregularly, the next time in the U19 , for which he played three times. For the U20 he played against Austria on September 3, 2008 and scored the goal to make it 4-2, but then canceled his participation in the U20 World Cup in Egypt in 2009 so as not to lose his regular place in the Bundesliga. On August 11, 2009, Müller was appointed to the U21 national team for the first time ; the game against Turkey was lost 3-1. He played six times for the oldest junior team.

A national team

On November 6, 2009, Müller was invited to the senior national team for the international test match against Ivory Coast . His inclusion in the A-squad was discarded shortly thereafter, as he should initially be used for the U21 in the Junior European Championship qualification against Northern Ireland and San Marino; national coach Joachim Löw had come to an agreement with U21 coach Rainer Adrion . On January 21, 2010, Müller von Löw was invited to take part in a performance test of the national team with a view to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . On March 3, 2010, Müller made his debut in the German senior national team. In the Allianz Arena at home , he played against Argentina from the start ; the game ended 0-1. In the 67th minute he was substituted for the second debutant of the evening, Toni Kroos .

World Cup 2010

On May 6, 2010 he was appointed to the extended squad by national coach Löw and shortly before leaving for South Africa in the final squad for the 2010 World Cup . In the first group game he scored his first goal in an A international match in a 4-0 win against Australia and also prepared another goal. In the 4-1 win against England in the round of 16, Müller scored two goals (3-1 and 4-1) and put on another goal for Lukas Podolski . In the quarter-final match against Argentina, he scored 1-0 with a header in the third minute. In the 35th minute he received his second yellow card from the World Cup because of a handball and was thus suspended for the semi-final against Spain on July 7, 2010 . In the 3-2 win in the game for third place against Uruguay , Müller scored the 1-0 and thus his fifth goal in the tournament, making him the most successful goal scorer of the German team at the tournament in South Africa ahead of Miroslav Klose. In the games against England and Uruguay he was elected Man of the Match .

With five goals and three assists, Müller received the Golden Shoe as top scorer at the 2010 World Cup. After Gerd Müller (1970) and Miroslav Klose (2006), he was the third German player to do so. He was also named the best young player .

EM 2012

After his breakthrough, he continued to take the regular position as the right winger of the national team. Among other things, he played all ten qualifying games for the 2012 European Championship , all of which were won - for the first time by a German national team. In addition, Müller contributed three goals and seven assists. In May 2012 he was called up to the EM squad and was in the first team to appear in the group stage. In the quarter-finals, coach Löw put together a completely new storm formation; only when the score was 2: 1 for Germany against Greece, Müller was substituted on. In the semifinals against Italy (1: 2) he came into play in the 71st minute as the last offensive measure for a defender. In none of the five tournament games he scored a goal or gave a successful assist.

World Cup 2014

On the way to his second World Cup participation, Müller ran again in all ten qualifying games for the national team. He contributed four goals and six assists to the successful qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. In the first group game of the German team at the World Cup finals on June 16, 2014 in Salvador da Bahia , he scored three goals in the 4-0 win over Portugal and one in the third group game against the USA . In the semifinals against Brazil he scored the 2,000th goal of the German national team with the goal to make it 1-0 in a 7-1 win . He had scored ten goals in twelve games at world championships and, together with Helmut Rahn, took fourth place in the ranking of the top scorers of the DFB at world championships. He is the first German player to score three goals in a game against a team in the top 10 of the FIFA world rankings , and the first World Cup top scorer to score five goals in the following World Cup. On July 13, 2014 he won the world championship title with the German team in Rio de Janeiro after a 1-0 victory in the final of the World Cup after extra time against Argentina .

EM 2016

On the way to the 2016 European Championship , Müller played nine out of ten qualifying games. With nine goals and two assists, he was the top scorer of the team that qualified for the tournament in France. On March 29, 2016, Müller led the DFB-Elf for the first time as captain in the test match against Italy .

He was in the national team for the 2016 European Championship and played all tournament games for the full season. However, he remained goalless at this European Championship and also missed his penalty in the penalty shoot-out in the quarter-finals against Italy. But he prepared the German goal in the last group game in the 1-0 victory over Northern Ireland. The team was eliminated in the semifinals against hosts France.

World Cup 2018 and following

At the 2018 World Cup , Müller played the full distance in the first two preliminary round matches against Mexico (0: 1) and Sweden (2: 1). After previously rather poor performance, Müller sat on the bench in the third round match against South Korea , in which it was a question of getting into the round of 16; Leon Goretzka was preferred. In the 63rd minute, Müller was finally brought on when the score was 0-0 for Goretzka. But even Müller, who could no longer build on his form as at the 2010 World Cup and 2014 World Cup, did not make it possible for Germany to advance to the round of 16. Instead, South Korea scored two more goals in stoppage time, which meant that Germany was eliminated after the preliminary round for the first time in World Cup history with their 2-0 defeat. In contrast to the previous World Championships, Müller had not succeeded in making a goal or assist in the tournament.

After the World Cup, Müller said that the early departure was also a “receipt for the interference from outside”: “If you are world champion, then you are under special observation and have to deal with many things that have nothing to do with football . ”With this, Müller was alluding to the scandal surrounding the meeting of Mesut Özil and Ilkay Gündoğan with the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan . On November 19, 2018, he played his 100th international match in Gelsenkirchen in the last group game of the Nations League in a 2-2 draw against the national team of the Netherlands , when he came on for Serge Gnabry in the 66th minute .

In March 2019, Löw announced a change in the national team and announced that Bayern players Thomas Müller, Jérôme Boateng and Mats Hummels will no longer be part of the DFB squad. Müller was disappointed, “perplexed” and “angry” about the way the decision was made. He also criticized the "suggested finality of the decision". He also criticized: “If - shortly after we heard about the decision of the national coach - prepared statements are issued to the press by the DFB and the DFB President, in my opinion this is not a good style and has nothing to do with appreciation. "

Löw was often criticized for the timing, the finality and the manner in which the decision was announced, as well as for the measure itself.

The table contains the number of all missions - broken down by competition and season by season - that Müller has played for FC Bayern Munich in competitive games and the national team, including the goals scored.
