society
From 1986 to 1988 Salenko played for Zenit Leningrad . In his first year at Zenit, the team finished fourth in the highest Soviet league . In the following year they just secured themselves relegation. After Salenko developed into a regular player, he moved to league rivals Dynamo Kiev at the beginning of 1989 . He was the first Soviet footballer to receive a transfer fee - 36,000 rubles , which was around $ 55,000 at the time - when moving within the country . There he formed the club's storm duo together with Oleh Protasov . In his first year in Kiev, however, the attacker only managed three hits. The team came in third in 1989.
A year later she secured the Soviet Football Cup with a 6-1 win against Lokomotiv Moscow . Salenko scored three goals for his team. In addition, the four Moscow teams CSKA , Dynamo , Torpedo and Spartak could be left behind in the league and won the championship. In 1991, the last year of the Soviet league, Salenko and Dynamo finished fifth. In 1992 the Ukrainian Premjer-Liha was launched. This was held in two seasons, with Kiev in season B and Tawrija Simferopol in season A could prevail. The championship was played in a final between these two teams. Here Dynamo lost 0-1 with Salenko in the starting line-up.
After finishing the league, Salenko moved to Spain, where he joined the Spanish club CD Logroñés . With his new club, the offensive player constantly played against relegation from the Primera División . In the summer of 1994, he left the club again and signed at Valencia . There he competed in the storm center with Lyuboslaw Penew .
After only a year he left the city and joined the Glasgow Rangers in Scotland, where he stayed for a short time and soon wore the İstanbulspor AŞ shirt in Turkey . At that time he was already having problems with injuries, so he only came to a few missions. In 1999/00 he tried his luck again in Spain without being able to really help FC Córdoba . Salenko made one last comeback attempt at the Polish club Pogoń Stettin . However, this failed and he had to end his active career. After all, he had to end his career at the age of 31 due to various injuries.
National team
Salenko played in the USSR junior selections before joining the Russian senior squad . In 1989, the striker took part with the U-20s in the 1989 World Youth Championship , where they failed in the quarter-finals against Nigeria on penalties. With five goals in four games, Salenko became the competition's top scorer.
After they dissolved the USSR , Salenko was faced with the question of which national team he should play for. As he was currently under contract in Kiev, he initially decided on the national team of Ukraine . For this he made his debut on April 29, 1992 against Hungary .
But the attacker ran for his home country again the following year, when he wore the jersey of the Russian national soccer team for the first time on November 17, 1993. In 1994 Salenko was appointed to the squad for the 1994 World Cup . At the World Cup, Salenko made history when he scored five goals against Cameroon (final score 6: 1) in the last game of the preliminary round and thus became the best goalscorer of the World Cup alongside Christo Stoitschkow , although Russia was eliminated after the preliminary round despite this success. With his five goals in one game, he set a record for World Cup games. This five-goal game was also the last encounter in which Salenko played for Russia. He is the only player to become the top scorer in the World Cup with the U-20 and senior national teams.
