Oldřich Nejedlý (born December 26, 1909 in Žebrák ; † June 11, 1990 ) was a Czechoslovak football player .

Club career

The Gunner Nejedlý was one of the great football stars in the 1930s. Born in Žebrak near Prague, Nejedlý began his football career in his hometown and moved to the provincial team Rakovník at the age of 16. From 1931 onwards there were ten successful years at Sparta Prague . He scored a total of 388 goals in 415 games from 1931 to 1941, including 161 goals in 187 league games, and was Czechoslovakian champion four times. From 1941 to 1950 he ran again for Rakovnik. At the end of his career he wore the jersey of his home club in Žebrak again and finally, at the age of almost 47, said goodbye to active football after a broken leg.

Nejedlý hardly went into direct duels because of his high susceptibility to injury. Rather, he was characterized by his good positional play and his technique. He scored his goals less with his shooting power than with his "eye for goal".

National team

At the Football World Cup in 1934 , the striker was the dominant player in his team on the Czechoslovak side. As the top scorer of the World Cup, he made a significant contribution to the finals with his five tournament hits; He scored three of the goals in a 3-1 victory in the semi-finals against the German team .

Four years later, at the 1938 World Cup in France , he broke his leg in the quarter-finals against Brazil . By then he had scored two goals in the tournament. In total, he scored 29 goals in 43 appearances for the Czechoslovak national team .

At the continental game on June 20, 1937 in Amsterdam between Central Europe and Western Europe, Nejedlý played on the side of Giuseppe Meazza , Silvio Piola and György Sárosi in the storm of Central Europe and scored a goal to their 3-1 success.
