György Sárosi (born September 16, 1912 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary , † June 20, 1993 in Genoa , Italy , in Italy also Giorgio Sarosi ) was a Hungarian football player and coach . He is considered one of the outstanding strikers of the 1930s.

Career

Sárosi started his career at Mugyetemi At. and in 1929 moved to the Ferencvárosi Torna Club , where he stayed until the end of his active career in 1948. During this period he and his club won the Hungarian Championship five times, the Hungarian Cup five times and the Mitropa Cup in 1937 . During this time he was three times Hungarian top scorer . He played 383 championship games for Ferencváros, in which he was able to score 351 goals.

In the Mitropacup he and his team made it to the final four times, was the top scorer twice and with 49 goals in 43 games is the most successful goalscorer in the history of this competition.

As a national player, he played a total of 62 international matches for Hungary between 1931 and 1943, in which he scored 42 goals. He took part in the World Championships in 1934 and 1938 . In 1934 he was only used once in the quarterfinals and scored a goal in the game against Austria with a penalty , which could not prevent the defeat. In 1938 he played four games in which he scored five times, including in the final, which was lost to Italy . Sárosi has scored at least one goal in each of his five world championship games. Furthermore, he was the most successful goalscorer in the European Cup of the national soccer teams from 1933 to 1935 as well as in the canceled competition from 1936 to 1938 . In September 1937 he scored seven goals in the game against Czechoslovakia .

After his active career, he worked as a coach in Italy, where he initially looked after AS Bari from 1948 to 1950 , before taking over Juventus Turin in 1951 after a brief stint at Lucchese and leading to the championship title in 1952. In 1953 he moved to CFC Genoa for two seasons and then looked after AS Roma from 1955 to 1957 . Further stations in Italy were FC Bologna (1957/58), again AS Roma in the 1958/59 season and Brescia Calcio (1960/61). After that he was still a coach at FC Lugano in Switzerland .

Sárosi was voted one of the 100 European Players of the Century in 1999 and finished fifth in the Hungarian Footballer of the Century election.
