Mitropa Cup 1937

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mitropapokal 1937 was the 11th edition of the international cup competition. The best teams from Austria , Hungary , Czechoslovakia , Italy , Switzerland , Yugoslavia and Romania took part. It was mostly the champions, runners-up and cup winners of the respective countries. The participants played in a pure cup mode with two legs in the most important continental football competition in the period before the Second World War. In the event of a tie after two games, a playoff was played. All 16 clubs started in the preliminary round or in the round of 16. The defending champions FK Austria Wien made it to the semi-finals and only failed there because of the eventual winner Ferencváros.

The finals took place in Budapest and Rome on September 12th and October 24th, 1937 , within a relatively long period of time . The Italian club SS Lazio and the Hungarian club Ferencváros Budapest qualified . At home, the Budapesters won 4-2 in the first leg of the final and also celebrated a narrow 5-4 triumph away, although Lazio were also 4-2 ahead in the meantime. The trophy went to a Budapest club for the third time and to Ferencváros for the second time since 1928 . The top scorer for the second time since 1935 was György Sárosi of the winning team with a record twelve goals.

2 Due to disputes after the first leg in Vienna between Austrians and Genoese and the poor condition of the stadium in Genoa, the police chief of Genoa stated that he could not assume any liability for security, whereupon the Italian Foreign Ministry canceled the second leg. The Mitropapokalkommitee then decided to exclude both teams from the tournament.
