Lajos Korányi , also known as Lajos Kronenberger and Korányi I , (born May 15, 1907 in Szeged , Austria-Hungary ; † January 29, 1981 in Budapest , Hungary ) was a Hungarian football player who won and won several titles with Ferencváros in the 1930s with the Hungarian national team in 1938 was vice world champion . His brother Mátyás also played for the Hungarian national team, while the youngest brother Dezső played for France .

Club career

Korányi learned the football game at the Újszegedi TC , from where he moved to the Szegedin professional club Bástya FC , which was one of the first two provincial clubs that competed in the top Hungarian league after the introduction of professional football in 1926 . The southern Hungarians were able to establish themselves in the middle of the league and reached the semi-finals of the cup competition in 1927 . Korányi developed into one of the strongest defenders in Hungary, who knew how to convince through athleticism and physical presence as well as through his positional play and his headball strength.

As a result, he also attracted the interest of the major Budapest clubs and in 1930 he accepted an offer from Ferencvárosi FC , where he first formed the defense with Géza Takács and then with Gyula Polgár . With the Green-Whites he was able to celebrate two championship titles and one cup victory in the first few years, but in October 1933 he broke his leg in an international match against Italy , which put him out of action for a long time and after which it would take several years until it regained its original strength. In 1937 he reached the final in the Mitropacup with the Franzensstädtern through victories over Slavia Prague , First Vienna FC and FK Austria Wien , where they met Lazio Rome . A 4-2 win in Budapest laid the foundation stone for the title win, which the team around György Sárosi and Géza Toldi managed to achieve with a 5: 4 in Rome. In the following season Korányi won his third championship title.

He then left the club and joined the Phőbus FC , which ran into economic difficulties and was eliminated from the league despite being in midfield. According to several Hungarian sources, Korányi is said to have worked for FC Sète in the French Division 1 , where his younger brother Dezső had been playing very successfully for several years. From French sources, however, no use in a league game can be verified, so it seems likely that Lajos will soon return to Budapest - possibly due to the start of the Second World War . There he was briefly active at Nemzeti SC before he made promotion with the second-rate Weisz Manfréd FC Csepel and completed another season in the top division.

National team

Korányi made his debut in the national team in a 5: 4 against Switzerland in April 1929, at a time when he was still playing in Szeged. In the national team he was also used as a left wing runner at the beginning, but was then able to secure a regular place in the defense on the side of Sándor Bíró . After his serious injury, it would be three and a half years before he was called up again in April 1937, which also meant he missed the 1934 World Cup .

After his return he played again mostly with Bíró, so also in the 11: 1 against Greece , which meant qualifying for the World Cup in France . There Korányi played all games up to and including the semi-finals against Sweden , which ended with 5: 1. For the final, of all places, the team management decided to forego the experienced defensive man for tactical reasons. His club colleague Polgár played in his place and the Hungarians were defeated by Italy 2-4.

After the World Cup, Korányi played in the national team until 1941 and ended his career after 40 missions.
