Sándor Bíró , also called Sándor beer , (born August 19, 1911 in Füzesabony , Austria-Hungary ; † October 7, 1988 in Budapest , Hungary ) was a Hungarian football player who won two Hungarian championships with Hungária FC and with the national team was runner-up in 1938 .
Club career
The defender Bíró began his career with III. Kerületi TVE , the professional club from the third district of Budapest. The team was able to place itself in the late 1920s and early 1930s always in the top half of the table and reached the cup final in 1931 , where Ferencvárosi FC were defeated 4-1. Bíró's strengths included his speed and technical skill, which made him one of the outstanding Hungarian defenders of his generation.
In 1933 he accepted an offer from Hungária FC, where he played alongside the experienced Gyula Mándi . Both in 1936 and 1937, the team with József Turay , Pál Titkos and Wudi Müller won the Hungarian championship . In the Mitropacup competitions, however, the Hungária ended up in the quarter-finals at the latest. Bíró played with the blue-whites until 1940, before the club was dissolved by the Horthy regime. In his last season at the club, Bíró was voted Hungarian Player of the Year.
He first moved to BSzKRT and after two years to Újpest FC . After the end of the Second World War , he returned to the newly founded blue-whites, who now again had their original name MTK , but were unable to build on their earlier successes in the post-war years. For a final season he returned to his home club and ended his career in 1949 after 450 championship games.
National team
Bíró made his debut in the national team in a 2-1 win against Germany in October 1932, when he formed the defender pair with Lajos Korányi . The two quickly became the main lineup on the Hungarian defensive before Korányi's career was interrupted by a broken leg. Bíró now played with various partners, in particular with László Sternberg and József Vágó , before Korányi returned to the national team in 1937.
The two contested together to qualify for the World Cup in France , which was achieved by an 11: 1 against Greece . At the final tournament, the well-rehearsed duo also stood in the victories over the Dutch East Indies , Switzerland and Sweden and thus reached the final. There, however, the team leadership decided on a different tactical variant and had Gyula Polgár appear on the side of Bíró. The Hungarians lost the final against Italy 2: 4 and became vice world champions.
After the World Cup, Bíró continued to play in the national team and was also part of the selection that played the first international match after the war in 1945, which ended in a 2-0 win over Austria . After four more missions, he ended his international career in 1946, during which he represented his country in 54 matches.
