Pál Titkos , also Pál Titschka , (born January 8, 1908 in Kelenvölgy , Austria-Hungary ; † October 8, 1988 in Budapest , Hungary ) was a Hungarian football player and football coach who won two Hungarian championships with Hungária FC in the 1930s with the national team in 1938 became vice world champion .

Club career

The tall left winger began his career at I. Kerület SE , from where he moved to first division club Budai 33 in 1926 after the introduction of professional football in Hungary . Although the Ofner always had to fight to stay in the league in the following years, the tech-savvy and two-legged striker was able to assert himself in the league and received an offer from Hungária FC in 1929.

There he established himself in a storm row, in which the national players Ferenc Hirzer and Jenő Kalmár stood and was able to celebrate his first title in 1932 with the cup victory. In the championship, however, it should only be enough for places between two and four for a long time and so it was until the 1935/36 season before the blue-whites won a championship title under the leadership of coach Alfréd Schaffer . Titkos' strike partner at the time included Ferenc Sas and Wudi Müller . A second league title followed in the next year and Titkos was voted Player of the Year at the end of the season.

After Hungária was dissolved by the Horthy regime in 1940 , Titkos was still active with Kispesti AC and Vasas during the war years before ending his career.

National team

Back in his time at Budai, Titkos played for Hungary for the first time when they lost 3-0 to the French in Paris in February 1929 . He quickly became a fixture on the left wing position of the national team, but was occasionally also used as a right winger. He scored his first goal in 1930 in a 3-1 win over Austria .

After he had not belonged to the Hungarian squad at the World Cup in 1934 , he was part of the team that was runner-up four years later. After beating Greece 11-1 twice in qualifying , he had to watch the finals in the first two games when Vilmos Kohut took the place on the left wing. In the semifinals against Sweden he came into the team, which reached the final with a 5-1 win. There he succeeded after eight minutes to equalize the early lead of the Italians , but in the end the latter were able to prevail with 4-2. Shortly after the World Cup, Titkos ended his career in the national team after 48 games and twelve goals.

Coaching career

In the 1946/47 season, Titkos was in charge of the re-established MTK. During the Aranycsapat period in the 1950s, Titkos was General Secretary of the Hungarian Football Association. From 1956 to 1959 he was in charge of the Egyptian national team , which he led to victory in the 1959 African Cup . Then he was coach of the Salgótarjáni BTC until 1962 . In the 1970s he worked again for the Hungarian association.
