József Turay (born March 1, 1905 in Eger , Austria-Hungary , † June 24, 1963 in Budapest , Hungary ) was a Hungarian football player who won five championship titles and the Mitropacup with Ferencváros and Hungária and with the Hungarian national team in the interwar period 1938 became vice world champion .

Club career

Turay began his career at Röppentyű utcai SC , from where he was brought in 1926 with the introduction of professional football from István Tóth-Potya to Ferencvárosi FC in the top Hungarian division . There the center forward was initially only a replacement, as this position was occupied by the established Mihály Pataki . Accordingly, Turay only made a few appearances, but was able to celebrate the double with the Franzensstädter in his first season. After Pataki had ended his career, Turay took over his position and was able to quickly establish himself in a storm row with Vilmos Kohut and József Takács .

The two-legged striker was able to distinguish himself in that he helped his strike partners to a number of goal chances, but was also dangerous on goal himself and convinced with his jumping ability in the header game. After the second double in a row was won in 1927, the green-whites were also qualified for the Mitropacup . With victories over the Beogradski SK and SK Admira Wien , the team reached the final, where SK Rapid Wien was waiting. In the first leg the Hungarians made everything clear with a 7: 1, the 3: 5 in the second leg was then just a matter of form, with Turay also participating with a goal.

In 1932 another championship title could be achieved, this time Ferencváros was in a class of its own, won all 22 championship games and scored a total of 105 goals with a series of storms, which in addition to Turay, Takács and Kohut had now also joined Géza Toldi and Mihály Táncos . That year he was also voted Hungarian Footballer of the Year. After a third cup win, Turay left the club in 1933 and joined local rivals Hungária FC.

In the blue-whites, however, László Cseh was an excellent center forward and Turay took over the position of center forward. There he gave the team support through his workload and his unspectacular but effective way of working and was able to add two more championship titles to his collection alongside Gusztáv Sebes under coach Alfréd Schaffer . He stayed with Hungária until 1940, when the club was dissolved by the Horthy regime and then ended his career with Ganz TE and Újvidéki AC .

National team

The center forward ran for the Hungarians for the first time in April 1928, when Czechoslovakia was defeated 2-0 in the Nations Cup . A few months later, he scored his first goal in the same competition against Switzerland . Turay was also part of the team that lost the victory at this first ever Európa Kupa in 1930 when they lost at home to Italy .

Turay had meanwhile won a regular place in the national team, where he was occasionally used as a left link. Due to his change of club and playing position, he was initially not taken into account. Although he was part of the Hungarian squad at the 1934 World Cup , he was not used there. It was not until 1935 that he was considered again in international matches and he succeeded in chasing György Szűcs off the regular place as a middle runner.

In the next few years he played again regularly for Hungary and also ran in all games up to and including the semi-finals at the 1938 World Cup . After the 5: 1 against Sweden , the team leadership decided to make some tactical changes for the final, including the position of the middle runner. Szűcs played in the final and Turay had to watch as the Hungarians lost 4-2.

He then played four more internationals and ended his international career against Poland in 1939 after 48 appearances and eleven goals.
