Nuno Severiano Teixeira

Nuno Severiano Teixeira (born November 5, 1957 in Bissau , Guinea-Bissau ) is a Portuguese historian and politician. From 2000 to 2002 he was Minister of the Interior as representative of the Socialist Party , and from 2006 to 2009 Minister of Defense of Portugal.

Life

Nuno Severiano Teixeira was born in what was then the Portuguese colony of Guinea-Bissau . In 1981 he completed his history studies at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Lisbon with a Licenciatura . From 1989 to 1992 he conducted research at the European University Institute in Florence (Italy), where he also received his doctorate in the history of international relations in 1994. From 1996 to 2000 he was director of the Institute for National Defense. In 2000 he was a visiting professor at the Government Department at Georgetown University , and in 2003 he was a visiting scholar at the Center for European Studies at the University of California at Berkeley . In 2005 he completed his habilitation at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the New University of Lisbon . He is currently Pro-Rector for Strategic Planning of the New University of Lisbon and Professor of Political Science and International Relations and Director of the Portuguese Institute for International Relations at the same institution.

In addition to his academic career, Severiano Teixeira also served as a politician. In the second cabinet of the socialist António Guterres , he headed the Ministry of the Interior. In the first cabinet of Prime Minister José Sócrates , he was Minister of Defense from the cabinet reshuffle on July 3, 2006 until the end of his term on October 26, 2009.
