Prime Minister António Guterres

The 14th constitutional, freely elected Portuguese government under Prime Minister António Guterres after the Carnation Revolution in 1974 is referred to as the Guterres II cabinet , in Portugal also called XIV Governo Constitucional de Portugal , in German XIV. Constitutional government of Portugal. The cabinet was in office from October 25, 1999 to April 6, 2002.

General election 1999

After the previous legislative period, in which Prime Minister Guterres had already ruled, ended on schedule, the parliamentary elections took place on October 10, 1999 . In the election, the ruling Partido Socialista (PS) again achieved a relative majority with 44.7 percent or 115 MPs and thus improved slightly compared to 1995 (43.7 percent and 112 MPs). With the election result, however, the PS narrowly missed an absolute majority of at least 113 MPs, from then on it ruled in the form of a minority government . Guterres' swearing in took place on October 25, 1999.
