Antonio José Seguro

António José Martins Seguro (born March 11, 1962 in Penamacor ) is a Portuguese politician of the Partido Socialista .

education

Seguro studied business management at the School of Labor Sciences, but graduated from the Autonomous University of Lisbon with a licenciatura in International Relations . There he officially works as a research assistant to this day.

MP

In 1990 Seguro was elected general secretary of the youth organization of the Portuguese socialists, the Juventude Socialista . He held the office until 1994. From 1991 until today Seguro is also a member of the Assembleia da República . From 1999 to 2001 Seguro had a mandate as a member of the European Parliament , where he wrote, among other things, on the “Report of the European Parliament on the Treaty of Nice and the future of the European Union”. Seguro held offices in both the Guterres I and Guterres II cabinets , in the latter he was “Assistant to the Prime Minister with the rank of Minister”.

From 2002 to 2004 he headed the Office for Scientific Investigations of the Partido Socialista, after which he was re-elected to the Assembleia da República. In the 10th legislature he headed the socialist parliamentary group and was chairman of the parliamentary committee for education and science. In the 11th legislature he was chairman of the committee for economy, innovation and energy.

After the resignation of José Sócrates , the delegates of the Partido Socialista elected him on July 24, 2011 with 67.98 percent of the vote as the party's new general secretary with the rank of chairman. His only competitor, Francisco Assis , received 32.02 percent of the vote.

Due to an internal ballot of the PS members, Seguro had to surrender the title of PS General Secretary to his competitor António Costa in spring 2015 .
