Cabinet of Guterres I
The 13th constitutional, freely elected Portuguese government under Prime Minister António Guterres after the Carnation Revolution in 1974 is referred to as the Guterre I cabinet , in Portugal also XIII Governo Constitucional de Portugal , in German XIII. called the constitutional government of Portugal. The cabinet was in office from October 28, 1995 to October 25, 1999.
Parliamentary elections 1995
In the parliamentary elections on October 1, 1995 , the Portuguese Socialists won for the first time since 1983, they received 44 percent of the vote and thus 112 of the 230 seats. This ended after ten years the reign of Prime Minister Aníbal Cavaco Silva , whose PSD party, after two absolute majorities in the previous elections, received only 34 percent or 81 seats. The two smaller parties, CDS-PP and CDU , each received 15 mandates. With this election result, the bipolarization of the Portuguese party landscape increased, the smaller parties threatened with a loss of importance.
The leading candidate for the Portuguese Socialists, António Guterres, was sworn in on October 28, 1995.
