Eduardo Luís Barreto Ferro Rodrigues (born November 3, 1949 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese economist and politician of the Socialist Party (PS). He has been President of the Portuguese Parliament since October 2015 .

Life

Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues completed his studies in economics in 1972 at the Instituto Superior de Ciências Económicas e Financeiras , today's Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão , at the University of Lisbon with the license ( licenciatura ) customary in Portugal . He then worked as a visiting professor at the Higher Institute for Business and Labor Sciences ( Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa ), where he lectured on Portuguese economics.

From 1986 to 1987 he was press spokesman for the Socialist Party for Labor and Social Affairs. From 1987 to 1991 was a member of the party secretariat and was responsible for social and economic affairs. From 1992 to 1994 was a member of the party commission. Since 1991 Ferro Rodrigues was represented in the Portuguese parliament , altogether in the IV., V., VI. and IX. Legislative period. In the VI. Ferro Rodrigues held the post of deputy group leader of the PS.

After the parliamentary elections in 1995 , in which the Socialist Party won with a relative majority, Prime Minister Guterres nominated Ferro Rodrigues as the new Minister for Solidarity and Social Insurance ( Ministro de Solidariedade e Segurança Social ). He held the post until November 25, 1997, when he headed the Department for Labor and Solidarity ( Ministro de Trabalho e Solidariedade ). He kept the office under the second government of Guterres , but changed on March 10, 2001 and became the new Minister for Social Institutions and Public Works ( Ministro de Equipamento Social e das Obras Públicas ). On December 16, 2001, the Portuguese local elections took place, in which the socialists suffered considerable losses. Thereupon Prime Minister Guterres resigned from all offices, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues also resigned as Minister and took over the vacant office of General Secretary of the Partido Socialista on January 21, 2002.

Meanwhile, the conservative Portuguese Social Democrats took over the government of Portugal under Prime Minister José Manuel Barroso after the 2002 elections . After he resigned to accept the office of EU Commission President , President Jorge Sampaio decided not to call new elections, but to swear in Pedro Santana Lopes as the new Prime Minister. This decision was heavily criticized by all left parties in the Portuguese parliament. Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues then resigned as opposition leader and General Secretary of the Socialists, his successor was the future Prime Minister José Sócrates .

After resigning, he initially retained his mandate in the Assembleia da República and headed the Portuguese delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe . On November 3, 2005 he was nominated as the new OECD ambassador for Portugal. After the parliamentary elections lost by the existing government , he was elected as the new Speaker of Parliament on October 23, 2015 to succeed Maria da Assunção Esteves . He prevailed with 120 to 108 votes against the conservative candidate Fernando Negrão . Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues is married and has two grown children.
