Audio file / audio sample Pedro Miguel Santana Lopes ? / i [ ˈpeðru sɐnˈtɐna ˈlɔpɪʃ ] (bornJune 29, 1956inLisbon) is aPortuguese politician(formerlyPSD, nowAliança). From 2004 to 2005 he was Prime Minister ofSantana Lopes' cabinet.

Life

Santana Lopes is a qualified lawyer from the University of Lisbon and studied political science in Germany for one year. At the age of 24 he became a member of the Portuguese parliament, later state secretary and minister of culture under Prime Minister Aníbal Cavaco Silva (1985–1995), and a member of the EU parliament for two years. After a failed attempt to become party leader, Santana Lopes was elected mayor of the port city of Figueira da Foz with 60 percent in December 1997 . In December 2001, he surprisingly won the local elections in Lisbon and became Lord Mayor of the capital.

Pedro Santana Lopes was Prime Minister of his country from July 17, 2004 to March 12, 2005 , after his predecessor José Manuel Barroso was elected President of the European Commission . For the same reason Lopes was a few days before President of his party Partido Social Democrata (PSD), which he belongs since the end of the dictatorship 1974th He was previously deputy in the party chairmanship and Barroso's “Crown Prince”, although the relationship had cooled lately.

In November 2004, however, President Jorge Sampaio prematurely dissolved parliament and announced early elections, which were held on February 20, 2005 and in which the Partido Socialista (PS) with its leader José Sócrates received an absolute majority. On March 12, 2005 Sócrates therefore took over the office of Prime Minister.

The eloquent, sociable politician is a stark contrast to the deliberate, determined Barroso, but not without controversy - even in his own party. He was often noticed by populist remarks and is constantly featured in the gossip press because of his role as a womanizer of the jet set. In 1995/1996 he was president of the Sporting Lisbon football club .

After a disappointing result in the 2017 local elections, in which the PSD only won 30% of the vote, PSD chairman Pedro Passos Coelho announced that he would not run for a fifth term as chairman of the PSD. Thereafter, both Rui Rio and Pedro Santana Lopes announced their candidacy. After a long internal election campaign, Rui Rio was elected with 54.15% of the vote, against 45.85% for Santana Lopes. Rui Rio was officially confirmed as party leader at the PSD Congress in Lisbon from February 16-18, 2018. Santana Lopes then resigned from the PSD and joined the newly founded, liberal, small party Aliança .
