Thorsten Frei , Member of the Bundestag (born August 8, 1973 in Säckingen ) is a German politician , member of the Bundestag and, since 2018, deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group . From 2004 to the end of 2013 he was Lord Mayor of the large district town of Donaueschingen .

Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1993 at the Scheffel-Gymnasium in Bad Säckingen, he did his basic military service in the Franco-German Brigade until 1994 . He then began studying law at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , which he completed in 1999 with the first state examination. After completing his legal clerkship at the Waldshut-Tiengen District Court , he passed his second state examination in 2001. Between 1999 and 2002 he taught law at the vocational academy in Lörrach and worked as a lawyer in Waldshut-Tiengen in 2001 and 2002 . Between 2002 and 2004 he was government councilor in Stuttgart under Minister of State Christoph Palmer . In 2004 Frei was elected Lord Mayor of Donaueschingen. On September 23, 2012, Frei was re-elected as Lord Mayor of Donaueschingen with 99.4 percent of the vote. Frei has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2013.

In 1999 he was elected to the town council of Bad Säckingen, where he was CDU parliamentary group chairman until 2004 . At the same time he was also a member of the association assembly of the regional association Hochrhein-Bodensee until 2004. In 2007 the CDU Baden-Württemberg elected him as deputy chairman of the party . In 2006 Frei was elected chairman of the CDU Baden-Württemberg's local political association and until 2016 he headed around 9,000 local politicians in the state. In addition to his parliamentary activities, Frei has been a district councilor of the Schwarzwald-Baar district since 2009 . Since 2011 he has also been chairman of the CDU district parliamentary group. In the state elections in 2016, Frei was campaign manager for the CDU Baden-Württemberg. Since 2017 he has also been the district chairman of the CDU Schwarzwald-Baar.

Member of the Bundestag

On November 16, 2012, Frei was nominated for the 2013 federal election with 68.6 percent of the delegate's votes as a CDU direct candidate in the Schwarzwald-Baar constituency , replacing Siegfried Kauder , a member of the Bundestag for many years , who received 31.4 percent. With 56.7% of the first votes he entered the Bundestag. In return, Frei gave up his post as Lord Mayor. He kept his residence in Donaueschingen. In the 2017 federal election , he won the direct mandate in the Schwarzwald-Baar federal electoral district with the second-best result in Baden-Württemberg. As a member of the 18th and until December 2018 the 19th German Bundestag, he was a full member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Committee on European Union Affairs . On December 11, 2018, Frei was elected by his parliamentary group as deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group for law and consumer protection, inside, sport and voluntary work, displaced persons, repatriates and German minorities. He succeeded Stephan Harbarth , who had previously been elected Vice President of the Federal Constitutional Court. He is also represented as a deputy member of the Committee on Home Affairs and Homeland. From 2013 to 2018 he was also chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group in the subcommittee on civil crisis prevention, conflict management and networked action. In addition, Frei is deputy chairman of the CDU state group Baden-Württemberg in the German Bundestag and chairman of the German-Swiss parliamentary group . Frei has been chairman of the board of trustees of the Federal Agency for Civic Education since 2018 .
