Médaille de la Defense National
The Médaille de la Défense nationale ( German national defense medal ) is a French military award. It was founded on April 21, 1982 by a decree of Defense Minister Charles Hernu and is awarded for special services during participation in missions. The award is given in gold, silver and bronze and can be given to any French soldier, reservist and civilian, and in exceptional cases also to foreigners. Death or injury, outstanding performance or important contributions to the defense of France are required. Soldiers require a minimum period of service for each level. A quota for the number of awards is set by the Minister of Defense.
Order decoration
The medal has a diameter of 36 mm and consists of bronze or is silver-plated or gold-plated in the respective level. The obverse shows a relief by François Rudes La Marseillaise above with the inscription RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE . The reverse shows a Phrygian cap over a laurel wreath with "ARMÉE" on top and "NATION" on the bottom with "DÉFENSE NATIONALE". Two five-pointed stars separate the inscriptions.
The medal hangs from a ring on a 36 mm wide band of moiré with a 12 mm blue stripe in the middle. The ribbons for gold and silver also have a narrow, white or yellow stripe on the edge.
