Pierre-François Forissier (born December 29, 1951 in Lorient , Département Morbihan ) is a former French admiral who was Deputy Chief between 2005 and 2008 and then Chief of the General Staff of the Navy from 2008 to 2011 .

Life

Forissier, son of the naval doctor Pierre Forissier, completed his secondary education in Nice , Marseille and Toulon and finally entered the Lycée naval de Brest in 1968 . After graduation, he began his training as a naval officer at the Naval School (École navale) in Lanvéoc in 1971 , which he completed in 1975. He was also a graduate of the submarine officers' school (École des officiers des armes sous-marines) and an engineer in nuclear energy engineering. In the following years, uses and training courses followed in Toulon, Brest and Lorient as well as on board various submarines . After that, he was deputy commander of the submarine Morse , the nuclear submarine Rubis and L'Inflexible . He was also in command of the red crew of Rubis and of the blue crew of the nuclear submarine Le Tonnant and also the nautical officer of the 20th mine hunting department and the mine hunting boat Glycine . In 1990 he was promoted to frigate captain (Capitaine de Frégate) and was maneuvering officer of the aircraft carrier Foch . For a while he was an examiner at the IHEDN (Institut des hautes études de Défense nationale) and at the CHEM (Center des hautes études militaires) Department of Studies in National Defense .

After his promotion to sea captain (Capitaine de Vaisseau) Forissier became deputy commandant of the Naval Training Center in Brest in 1993. He then found employment as a staff officer in the materials department and the planning department of the naval staff, in which he was initially deputy head of the studies and basic planning department and later head of the finance department. In 2001 he was promoted to Flotilla Admiral (Contre-amiral) and initially served as Deputy Commander of the Naval Region of the Atlantic Ocean and then, after his promotion to Rear Admiral (Vice-amiral), as the successor to Rear Admiral Thierry d'Arbonneau between 2004 and his replacement by Rear Admiral Yves Boiffin 2005 as commanding admiral of the submarine and strategic naval forces ALFOST (Forces sous-marines / Force océanique stratégique) .

In 2005 Forissier was promoted to Vice-Admiral (Vice-amiral d'escadre) and replaced Vice-Admiral Alain Oudot de Dainville as Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Navy (Major général de la Marine) . He held this post until his replacement by Vice Admiral Jacques Launay on February 4, 2008, whereupon he was promoted again to Admiral (Amiral) and Admiral Alain Oudot de Dainville was now Chief of the General Staff of the Navy (Chef d'état-major de la Marine) . He remained in this position until his retirement, whereupon Admiral Bernard Rogel succeeded him on September 12, 2011 .

Forissier, the Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor and Commander of the Order of Merit of the Sea , is married to Brigitte Desbrest and the father of four children.
