The Rubis (S601) is a tactical nuclear submarine of the French Navy . Its original name was Provence . On December 18, 1980, however, it was renamed after the successful French submarine Rubis in World War II . The name means ruby . The Rubis (S601) is the lead ship of the Rubis class and was extensively tested before it was put into service in 1983 as the first boat of its class.

In July 1985, the Rubis was involved in Operation Satanique of the French foreign secret service DGSE . In the covert operation it was the sinking of the Greenpeace -Schiffes Rainbow Warrior in the port of Auckland in New Zealand . After the bomb attack that killed a Portuguese photographer, the submarine captured some of the assassins and took them to a safe French base.

In the Second Gulf War in 1990, the boat was used as a French part of the naval operations of the US- led coalition.

The nuclear submarine was modernized between 1992 and 1993 to the level of the Améthyste class . Shortly after the conversion work, the Rubis collided with the tanker Lyria on July 17, 1993 , but suffered only minor damage.

During the Kosovo war in 1999, the Rubis was used together with the sister ship Améthyste (S605) to secure the maritime attack forces of NATO . In addition, the sea area off Kotor was closed to Yugoslav shipping and educational work was carried out.

In 2002 France used the Rubis (S601) in the war in Afghanistan to secure the surface forces in the Indian Ocean .
