The Émeraude (S604) is a tactical nuclear submarine of the French Navy . The name goes back to an unfinished submarine class from the late 1930s and a submarine class from the First World War and translated means emerald . The Émeraude (S 604) is the third submarine in the Rubis class .

On March 30, 1994, during a submarine hunt exercise, there was an explosion in the engine room of the Émeraude , in which 10 crew members died.

The nuclear submarine was modernized between May 1994 and December 1995 to the technical standard of the Améthyste class .

In June 2009, the Émeraude was sent to the Atlantic off the Brazilian coast to use its sonar equipment to locate the flight recorder of Air France Flight 447 .
