The Saphir (S602) was a tactical nuclear submarine of the French Navy . Her original name was Brittany . Later, however, it was renamed after the type ship of the same name of the sapphire class used in World War II . The name means sapphire . The Saphir was the second boat in the Rubis class .

The nuclear submarine was modernized to the Améthyste class between October 1989 and May 1991 .

Trivia

During a proposed enemy attack as part of a NATO exercise off Florida , the Saphir "sank" the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) along with a large part of its carrier combat group .
