Maria de Belém Roseira Martins Coelho Henriques de Pina , in Portugal mainly known as Maria de Bélem (born July 28, 1949 in Porto ) is a Portuguese lawyer and since 1999 a member of the Assembleia da República and a politician of the Partido Socialista (PS).

biography

Public service work

Maria de Belém graduated with a Licenciatura from the University of Coimbra in 1972 and began her professional career as an employee of the Ministry of Enterprise and Social Welfare (1973) in the Department of Social Insurance (Direção-Geral da Previdência). After the fall of the dictatorship, Belém continued her work in the public service, including a. in the office of Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo , State Secretary for Social Security and later as Office Manager of the Minister of Health at Bloco Central , António Maldonado Gonelha .

In 1986/87 Belém worked as managing director of the Macau Colonial Broadcasting Company . In 1988 Leonor Beleza , Minister of Health in Cabinets I and II under Cavaco Silva, appointed Belém as deputy head of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia in Lisbon (1988–1992). In 1992, Belém moved to the regional center of the Portuguese Institute for Oncology as managing director (1992–1995).

Appointment as minister

Belém has been a member of the Socialist Party since 1976. In 1995 the socialist Prime Minister António Guterres appointed her health minister in his first cabinet . In 1999, in Guterres ' second cabinet , Belém took over responsibility for gender equality. Due to a disagreement with Manuela Arcanjo , who succeeded her in the health department, she left the government in 2000.

Work as a member of parliament

After she left the executive branch, she took up her work as a member of the Assembleia da República , for which she was elected in the constituency of Porto in 1999 , but had not accepted the mandate at the time. Belém was re-elected in 2002 , 2005 , 2009 and 2011 .

In December 2006, when she was still chairing the health committee, the private health company Espírito Santo Saúde hired Belém as a consultant. She stated that she does not consider it a conflict of interest to hold both positions at the same time. In 2015, while she was still a Member of Parliament, she was introduced as a member of the executive branch of the Board of Directors at Luz Saude , an equally private healthcare company of ESG.

Candidate for the office of President

On August 17, 2015, Maria de Belém declared her candidacy for the 2016 presidential election in Portugal . Although she is a member of the PS, she is running without official support from her party. In addition to Belém, Sampaio de Nóvoa and Henrique Neto are also running as socialist candidates.

Honors

Belém has been the bearer of the Order of Christ since 2005 .

Maria de Belém Roseira is married and has one daughter.
