After two terms in office, President Aníbal Cavaco Silva was not allowed to run again.

On 24. January 2016 the ninth place presidential election in Portugal since the Carnation Revolution instead. A good 9.7 million Portuguese worldwide were called to elect a new president . In this election, the successor to Aníbal Cavaco Silva was determined, who was not allowed to run again after two terms. Office and duties

Admitted candidates

On December 29, 2015, the Portuguese Constitutional Court announced that it would allow ten candidates to stand for election. Any citizen with Portuguese citizenship with active voting rights and a minimum age of 35 years could stand for election. In addition, each candidate had to have collected at least 7,500 support signatures up to 30 days before the election. The constitutional court determined the order of the candidates:

With ten people running, the 2016 presidential election is the election with the most eligible candidates. So far this has been the 1980 election with seven candidates.
