Presidential election in Portugal 2016
On 24. January 2016 the ninth place presidential election in Portugal since the Carnation Revolution instead. A good 9.7 million Portuguese worldwide were called to elect a new president . In this election, the successor to Aníbal Cavaco Silva was determined, who was not allowed to run again after two terms. The new President will take office on March 9, 2016.
Office and duties
In the semi-presidential system of government in Portugal, the president mainly performs representative tasks, but has some important rights and duties. With a view to the election results, he nominates the Prime Minister , who in turn proposes his cabinet. The President also appoints the generals of the Portuguese army , ambassadors and prosecutors general and presidents of the courts, he can declare a state of emergency and, if the government suggests, declare war or make peace with another country . In addition, the President signs all decrees and laws passed by the Assembleia da República and represents the Portuguese Republic in matters of international treaties. He can also decide on amnesties and requests for clemency.
Admitted candidates
On December 29, 2015, the Portuguese Constitutional Court announced that it would allow ten candidates to stand for election. Any citizen with Portuguese citizenship with active voting rights and a minimum age of 35 years could stand for election. In addition, each candidate had to have collected at least 7,500 support signatures up to 30 days before the election. The constitutional court determined the order of the candidates:
- Henrique Neto , entrepreneur, member of the PS , former MP in the Assembleia da República
- António de Sampaio da Nóvoa , member of the PS, former rector of the University of Lisbon
- Cândido Ferreira, independent doctor
- Edgar Silva , Partido Comunista Português
- Jorge Sequeira, independent
- Vitorino Silva ("Tino de Rans"), Independent, former Mayor of Rans
- Marisa Matias , Bloco de Esquerda , MEP
- Maria de Belém , member of the PS, former Minister of Health and Minister for Equality, former chairwoman of the PS
- Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa , university professor, former chairman of the PSD
- Paulo de Morais, Independent Former Deputy Mayor of Porto
With ten people running, the 2016 presidential election is the election with the most eligible candidates. So far this has been the 1980 election with seven candidates.
