In the presidential election in Portugal in 2021 was the tenth time since the Carnation Revolution of the President of Portugal elected.

The election took place on January 24, 2021. The incumbent president was Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa , who clearly achieved an absolute majority and was thus re-elected.

Office and duties

Standard of the President

In the semi-presidential system of government in Portugal, the president has primarily representative tasks, but has some important rights and duties. With a view to the election results, he nominates the Prime Minister , who in turn proposes his cabinet. The President also appoints the generals of the Portuguese army , ambassadors and prosecutors general and presidents of the courts of justice.

He can also declare a state of emergency and, if the government suggests, declare war or make peace with another country . In addition, the President signs all decrees and laws passed by the Assembleia da República and represents the Portuguese Republic in matters of international treaties. He can also decide on amnesties and requests for clemency.

Suffrage

A candidate must obtain an absolute majority of the votes to be elected. If nobody can do this in the first ballot, a runoff election will take place between the two candidates with the most votes.

Acting President

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa from the Partido Social Democrata (PSD) was elected in the last presidential election with 52 percent in the first ballot. He became the successor to his party colleague Aníbal Cavaco Silva , who was no longer allowed to run after two terms.

COVID-19

The presidential election fell in the middle of the preliminary climax of the COVID-19 pandemic in Portugal . With a value of 790, the country had the highest COVID-19 incidence in the world on January 23, 2021, the day before the election . Observers therefore expected a historically low turnout.
