João Ferreira (2019)

João Manuel Peixoto Ferreira (born November 20, 1978 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) politician . Ferreira has been a member of the European Parliament since the 2009 European elections . He defended his mandate in the 2014 and 2019 European elections , in which he ran as the top candidate of his party.

Life

education

João Ferreira was born on November 20, 1978 in Lisbon and grew up in the Lumiar district . After graduating with a degree in biology and two scholarships in scientific research programs at the University of Lisbon and the New University of Lisbon , Ferreira began a PhD in 2009. Later he worked as a consultant for the inter-municipal water management association of the Setúbal region .

Political commitment

João Ferreira joined the Communist Party's youth organization (JCP) at the age of 16. At the PCP, Ferreira was a member of the Central Committee, the Regional Board of Lisbon and the Board of the Lisbon Intellectual Circle. From 1997 to 2005 he sat on the council of the Lisbon district of Ameixoeira .

The media speculate that João Ferreira is seen as the successor to the long-time chairman of the Portuguese Communists, Jerónimo de Sousa .

Entry into the European Parliament

In 2009 his party nominated him for second place on the electoral list for the European Parliament . The PCP won two of the 22 Portuguese mandates with 10.64 percent, so Ferreira moved in together with Ilda Figueiredo . Both joined the Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left . In the 7th electoral term (2009-2014) Ferreira was a member of the Committee on Fisheries for his political group and a deputy member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and the Committee on Budgets (2012-2014).

For the 2014 European elections , the top spot on the list, Ilda Figueiredo, did not run, so the PCP nominated Ferreira as the top candidate. In the election, the PCP won 12.68 percent, three of the 21 Portuguese mandates. Inês Cristina Zuber and Miguel Viegas moved in together with Ferreira , all of them joined the GUE / NGL parliamentary group, Ferreira was elected to the parliamentary group's executive committee. In the 8th electoral term (2014–2019), Ferreira was a member of the Fisheries Committee for his group and a deputy member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy .

In parallel to his mandate in the European Parliament, Ferreira was elected to the Lisbon City Council in the 2013 local elections. He defends his city council mandate in 2017.

In the European elections in 2019 , Ferreira ran again as the top candidate. The PCP lost significantly in votes compared to the 2014 election and won 2 of the 21 Portuguese mandates with 6.88 percent of the votes. In addition to Ferreira, Sandra Brito Pereira also moved in , both of whom joined the GUE / NGL parliamentary group. The group members elected Ferreira as deputy chairman. In the 9th electoral term, Ferreira is a member of the Committee on Transport and Tourism and the Fisheries Committee for his group . He is also an alternate member of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety .

As a member of the Portuguese Communists, Ferreira represents a strongly nationalist, left-wing policy. Among other things, he calls for the dissolution of the European Economic and Monetary Union as well as greater economic autarky for Portugal.

Ferreira is married and has two children.
