Miguel Viegas

Miguel Lopes Batista Viegas (born June 27, 1969 in Paris , France ) is a Portuguese economist and politician ( PCP ). From 2014 to 2019 he was MEP for Portugal.

Viegas grew up as the son of Portuguese immigrants in Paris and returned to Portugal when he was ten. He completed his studies in veterinary medicine at the Technical University of Lisbon in 1993 with a licenciatura . Viegas worked as a veterinarian until 2011. Viegas completed another degree in economics in 2004 at the University of Aveiro , where he also completed his habilitation in the subject in 2010. Since 2008 he has been working as a lecturer and researcher in economics at the same university, particularly in the field of macroeconomics and budgetary policy .

In 2013 he was elected to the city parliament of Ovar in the local elections for the Communist Party . In 2014, the party nominated him for third place on the European election list of the Communist-Greens Association ( Coligação Democrática Unitária ). The alliance achieved surprisingly significant gains and won three seats in the European Parliament for the first time since 1994 with 12.68 percent , so that Miguel Viegas moved into the European Parliament alongside João Ferreira and Inês Zuber . In 2019, Viegas left parliament on a regular basis.
