European elections in Portugal in 1994
The European elections in Portugal in 1994 took place on June 12, 1994. It was carried out in the course of the EU- wide European elections in 1994 , with 25 of the 567 seats in the European Parliament in Portugal . The election took place according to proportional representation without a threshold clause, with the whole of Portugal being considered a single constituency .
As in the European elections in 1989 , the same four parties moved in: Partido Socialista , Partido Social Democrata , Centro Democrático e Social - Partido Popular and Coligação Democrática Unitária . The two largest parties, Socialists and Social Democrats, both gained relatively more votes and came to almost the same result - at the expense of the two smaller parties. Compared to the 1989 election, all parties lost massive votes - in absolute terms -, and voter turnout also fell from 51.10 to 35.54 percent. At the same time, a lot of new small parties started, but none of them could remember a seat.
With the enlargement of the parliament to 567 members, Portugal also gained one seat from 24 to 25 seats.
