Eurico de Melo

Eurico Silva Teixeira de Melo (born September 28, 1925 in Santo Tirso , † August 1, 2012 in Porto ) was a Portuguese politician of the Partido Social Democrata (PSD).

Life

Eurico Silva Teixeira de Melo completed a degree in chemical engineering at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto and then worked as an engineer and as a lecturer in textile chemistry at the University of Porto. Then worked for the large textile company Somelos, which belongs to his family . After the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974, he began his political commitment and was between October 18, 1975 and September 22, 1976 civil governor of the Braga district . In the Sá Carneiro cabinet , he served from January 3, 1980 to January 9, 1981 for the first time as Minister of Internal Administration (Ministro da Administração Interna) . In 1981 he sold his shares in Somelos and then founded his own company.

In the election of October 6, 1985 Melo was elected for the Partido Social Democrata (PSD) as a member of the Assembly of the Republic ( Assembleia da República ) and represented in this from November 4, 1985 to October 26, 1995 the interests of Braga . In the subsequently formed Cavaco Silva I cabinet , he was Minister of State (Ministro de Estado) between November 6, 1985 and August 17, 1987, and Minister of the Interior again. In the following cabinet, Cavaco Silva II, he held the offices of Vice Prime Minister (Vice-primeiro-ministro) and (Ministro da Defesa Nacional) from August 17, 1987 to January 5, 1990 .

In the European elections on June 12, 1994 , Melo was elected as the leading candidate PSD to be a member of the European Parliament and was a member of the European Parliament until the European elections on June 13, 1999 . At times he was chairman of the board of directors of Banco Santander .
