The European elections in Portugal in 1989 took place on June 18, 1989. It was carried out in the course of the EU- wide European elections in 1989 . Portugal first took part in the simultaneous election after the Portuguese Euro MPs were elected in a by-election in 1987. The election took place according to proportional representation without a threshold clause, with the whole of Portugal being considered a single constituency . In the election, 24 of the 518 seats in the European Parliament were awarded in Portugal .

Members of the four major parties of the Portuguese party system at the time entered the election: Partido Social Democrata , Partido Socialista , Coligação Democrática Unitária and Centro Democrático e Social - Partido Popular . The social democrats ruling at the national level clearly lost votes in favor of communists and socialists. For the first time (and so far the only time) a member of the Greens entered parliament via the joint list of Greens and Communists (CDU) . The party of the former President António Ramalho Eanes , the Partido Renovador Democrático , which won a seat in the by-elections in 1987, entered the list of socialists this time and thus also won a seat. Compared to 1987, the turnout fell significantly from 72.42 percent to 51.10 percent.
