Carlos Carvalhas

Carlos Alberto do Vale Gomes Carvalhas (born November 9, 1941 in São Pedro do Sul ) is a Portuguese politician . He was the Portuguese Minister of Labor and Secretary General of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP; Portuguese Partido Comunista Português ).

Life

Carvalhas is a trained economist and was a member of the student and trade union movements during the dictatorship . In 1969 he became a member of the PCP. He was Minister of Labor in five successive transitional governments after the 1974 Carnation Revolution .

From 1976 to 1983 he was a member of the PCP Central Committee without a permanent seat, since 1983 he has been a full member of the Central Committee. He was also a member of the party executive committee and the political commission. On the XIII. (extraordinary) party congress of the PKP In 1990 Carvalhas was elected Deputy Secretary General. From December 1992 (XIV Party Congress) to November 2004 (XVII Party Congress) Carvalhas was Secretary General of the PCP.

From 1976 to 2005 he was a member of the Portuguese Parliament ( Portuguese Assembleia da República ). In the elections to the European Parliament in 1989 , he led the list of the electoral alliance Coligação Democrática Unitária (German "United Democratic Coalition") and was elected to the European Parliament . In 1991 he was the PCP's presidential candidate and received 635,373 votes (12.9%).
