São Pedro do Sul is a city ( Cidade ) in Portugal . The place is particularly known for its thermal baths .
history
Excavations carried out in 1985 prove the extensive facilities of the thermal baths that the Romans built here , after whose name the place was called Balneum for a long time. Portugal's first king, D.Afonso Henriques , also appreciated the healing power of the local springs and granted the town its first town charter ( Foral ) in 1152 . The place previously called Banhos was henceforth called Vila do Banho , and is still the seat of its own district. After the conquest of Badajoz in 1169, the injured D. Afonso Henriques recovered here for a while. His presence led to a lively development of the place, the sources of which from then on demanded fame and were sought out by many noblemen of the time.
King Manuel I had the Hospital Real das Caldas de Lafões (English: Royal Hospital of the Baths of Lafões) built here and in 1515 extended the town's rights to the town after he had recovered in the town. In 1884 the city administration ( Câmara Municipal ) built new facilities for the hospital and baths. In 1894 the Portuguese Queen Amélie d'Orléans recovered here , and since 1895 the place was called Caldas da Rainha D. Amélia (English: Baths of Queen Amélia).
As a result of the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic in 1910, the place received its current name. In 1987 the place received new thermal facilities and in 2001 the modernized original Caldas da Rainha D. Amélia were reopened. They were u. a. expanded to include a museum and a congress center. The number of visitors to the thermal baths continued to rise and in 2012 was over 25,000 guests a year.
The place was raised to the Cidade (city) in 2009 .
