Nelas is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( concelho ) in Portugal with 14,037 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

A large number of finds prove a prehistoric settlement of the area. In the course of the various administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , the Nelas district was newly created in 1852 by merging the previously independent Senhorim and Canas de Senhorim districts. The district took some development with the arrival of the railway in 1882 and the road connections improved in various stages.

Nelas is the seat of a district of the same name. The neighboring areas are (starting clockwise in the north): Mangualde , Seia , Oliveira do Hospital , Carregal do Sal and Viseu .

With the regional reform in September 2013, several municipalities were merged into new municipalities, so that the number of municipalities decreased from nine to seven.

economy

Industry is a major engine of Nelas' economy. Its railway and road connections, raw material deposits in the Minas da Urgeiriça and the energy produced by nearby power stations created the conditions for the emergence and settlement of industrial companies. In the meantime, however, a relative de-industrialization has taken place in the district, which is countered with the settlement of new companies in the district's industrial parks.

Nelas is located in the Dão wine region . With the Festa / Feira do Vinho do Dão , one of the most important festivals in the wine region takes place here. The Centro de Estudos Vitivinícolas , the research center of the Dão wine region, is based in Nelas. In addition to viticulture, the rest of the agriculture is also important. The local cheese variant belongs to the Queijo Serra da Estrela (Portuguese: Denominação de Origem Protegida ) cheese . The local olive oil should also be mentioned.

Tourism is important here as individual tourism , and takes place in particular in facilities of the rural tourism . These are often set up in historic mansions . Another attraction for visitors are the Caldas da Felgueira thermal baths .

Nelas train station is a stop on the Linha da Beira Alta railway line .

Nelas is located on National Road N234 that merges km south-west in the four-lane expressway IC12 about 10, while 15 km northeast of Junction Mangualde the A25 motorway (also European route E80 ) crosses.

The place is integrated into the national bus network of Rede Expressos .
