São João da Pesqueira is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( concelho ) in Portugal with 2189 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). It belongs to the Alto Douro wine-growing region , which has been the world's first protected wine-growing region since 1756 . This has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 .
history
Dolmens and ramparts are evidence of prehistoric settlement up to the Castro culture . King Alfonso III (Asturias) conquered the place from the Moors in the 9th century and had it repopulated. Between 1055 and 1065 the place received its first city rights from Ferdinand I (León) . São João da Pesqueira received its first city rights in the independent kingdom of Portugal in 1198 from King Sancho I , which were confirmed in 1376 and renewed in 1510.
Culture and sights
The district's monuments include historical public buildings, mansions and sacred buildings , including the historic hospital with its single-nave church, the Igreja (e Hospital) da Misericórdia de São João da Pesqueira , which was originally built in the 16th century, and baroque altars gilt wood ( Talha dourada ) and Altarretabel of Rococo holds. The historic town center as a whole is also a listed building.
Some sections of the landscape along the Douro are protected. Various hiking trails lead through the district, some of them themed, such as the Rotas dos Vinhos da Europa wine route (English: routes of European wines). Signposted hiking trails also lead along the archaeological excavations, prehistoric finds and rock paintings in the district.

São João da Pesqueira is the administrative seat of a district of the same name. The neighboring areas are (starting clockwise in the north): Alijó , Carrazeda de Ansiães , Vila Nova de Foz Côa , Penedono , Sernancelhe , Tabuaço and Sabrosa .
With the regional reform in September 2013 , several municipalities were merged into new municipalities, so that the number of municipalities decreased from 14 to eleven.
