Moimenta da Beira is a small town ( Vila ) and a district ( concelho ) in Portugal with 2888 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
Finds and excavations prove a prehistoric settlement of the area. In the course of the Reconquista , the changing conquests by Moors and Christian armies caused the area to be depopulated. In connection with the newly formed county of Portugal , a repopulation of the area began, which resulted in the current town. The place was already known in 1140. Moimenta received its first town charter in 1189.
With the founding of the women's Benedictine -Klosters Convento de Nossa Senhora da Beneditino Purificação in the 16th century Moimenta took some recovery, was closed to the monastery in 1812 again by the Bishop of Lamego. The destruction of French troops in the course of the Napoleonic invasions in 1808 initiated a relative decline of the district. With the administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the subsequent Miguelistenkrieg , the circle of Moimenta da Beira was significantly expanded. After further expansion, the district reached its current size in 1896.
Culture and sights
The architectural monuments in the district include a number of mansions , historic public buildings and a variety of sacred buildings . The historic town center as a whole is also a listed building.
A number of circular routes and hiking trails are set up in a circle. Some themed routes lead e.g. B. along archaeological sites or historical traditional village facilities.
In addition to the city library, the city music academy or the city's event center Auditório Municipal , other cultural sites can be found in the district, including the Casa-Museu Aquilino Ribeiro , which is dedicated to the work and life of the writer Aquilino Ribeiro , and the ethnographic museum Museu Etnográfico de Arcozelos in the municipality of Arcozelos.
