João Manuel

João Manuel Loureiro dos Santos (born August 31, 1967 in Moimenta da Beira , † May 18, 2005 in Guimarães ) was a Portuguese football player .

The farmer's son from the Viseu district began his football career at the Académico Viseu Futebol Club . As a midfielder, he has played 254 games in the Portuguese Super League since 1988 . He came to Benfica Lisbon in 1987 as a junior player and was under contract with Académico de Viseu from the 1987/88 season. From 1992/1993 João Manuel played for Académica de Coimbra and from 1995/96 moved to União Desportiva de Leiria , where he was committed until June 2004. Since July 2004 he was part of the Moreirense FC squad . After two games in the 2004/05 season, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis on September 11, 2004 , which progressed rapidly.

His illness was followed with great sympathy by the Portuguese public and fundraising campaigns were organized by several major clubs such as Sporting Lisbon and Benfica Lisbon. At the age of 37, João Manuel died in the Nossa Senhora da Oliveira Hospital in Guimarães.
