Music is Trumps was a music revue with sketch inserts and request concert character from ZDF , ORF and SRG , which ran from 1975 to 1981 and was broadcast live on Saturday evening . Your concept was designed by Peter Frankenfeld , who also presented it until his death. His successor was Harald Juhnke until his alcohol problems led to the series being discontinued.

Frankenfeld no longer asked

Peter Frankenfeld had to end his show Vergißmeinnicht in 1970 without being offered a comparable program. On the one hand, the ZDF now relied on younger show masters, and on the other hand, its concept was no longer in demand with the broadcaster. Entertainment now also had to convey knowledge, or even better, teach. Frankenfeld did not embody either. Since he was the most important show master on ZDF, he was given the show You and He in Cross-Examination , which ran in the evening program, but nothing more. With the new line, ZDF lost many viewers, especially the older ones no longer felt addressed.

Change of leadership at ZDF

The situation only changed when the head of entertainment Heinz Oepen was replaced by Peter Gerlach in the summer of 1972 and with the surprising death of the controversial program director Joseph Viehöver in August 1973. Now Frankenfeld's acceptance was tested with individual shows, namely on November 15, 1973 The wind told me a song and on August 22nd, 1974 with music is in the air . It was about music revues in which stars like Mona Baptiste or Helmut Zacharias performed evergreens and Peter Frankenfeld appeared as emcee . The shows were as well received by the older audience as only the Peter Alexander Show . From the targeted questioning of various audience groups, Gerlach concluded that the entertainment revue, which was considered out of date, had to be revived. This should have the character of a request concert and can only be presented by Peter Frankenfeld. The only editor who supported the plans was Harald Müller.

Visit of Peter Gerlach and Harald Müller in Wedel

Gerlach and Müller visited Frankenfeld in November 1974 in his private house in Wedel to offer him a regular big music revue for Saturday evening. Frankenfeld was initially disappointed: “You need me for that? I should announce the music of this and that and such and that - nothing more? ”Only when the two announced that they had come to turn a series of requests for a Frankenfeld show and that a link to the radio was planned and records for charity, so he got pencil and paper to immediately draw up the wish list. From then on, Frankenfeld worked on the show every day. He later described Gerlach and Müller as the most original editorial team he had ever met.

Frankenfeld era

Pilot broadcast

On Thursday, January 2nd, 1975, a pilot program took place under the title Music is Trumps, Melodies You Never Forget . It came from the Rheingoldhalle in Mainz and was still modest in its effort, but already owned the famous later zebra crossing ramp, which optically came very close to a show staircase due to the striped alternation of black and white, but had the advantage of being flat Ballet and artists to be able to walk and dance without stumbling.

First edition

The first official broadcast took place on February 22nd, 1975 in front of 2500 viewers in the Philipshalle in Düsseldorf . The audience only dismissed Frankenfeld after prolonged applause; ZDF received enthusiastic calls an hour and a half after the broadcast, something that had not happened since the first Peter Alexander show five years earlier. The program for this edition had not yet been selected by the viewers, but the coupon with the suggestions for the second edition was found in the program guides of the week in question.

Stage design

As a big Saturday night show, Music Trumps got a festive appearance. Peter Frankenfeld always appeared in tuxedo and the stage was set with flowers decorated . The central element was the above-mentioned “zebra crossing show staircase” to the right around the orchestra, via which the ballet and the showmaster at the beginning, then the performers individually and “for the grand finale”, all reached the stage together. The dance orchestra was housed on a pedestal to the left.

Audience participation

In various program magazines there were coupons that should be cut out and pasted on the back of a postcard. Since it was not a mere request concert, there was no free choice, but you could only tick a title from several listed suggestions from the editors within different images (music themes). A number of prizes were drawn from the entries, including trips, portable color televisions worth 500 DM and records, the winners of which were read out on the program or presented in person. However, only those who had ticked every winning title in all categories could win. To refer again to the viewer's vote in the newspaper, many TV guides usually announced the show with Chosen by you: Music is the trump card .

Comedy

Comedy elements were an important part of music is trumps . Since the music was aimed more at older viewers, they ensured that younger people also watched the program. There was a ten-minute sketch with specially invited actors, for example Walter Giller and mostly Frankenfeld's wife, Lonny Kellner . In addition, there were shorter performances, which Frankenfeld usually performed alone or with the orchestra conductor. The skits were so popular that they were broadcast independently in 1987 as a six-part series Humor is Trumps . In practically every program, Frankenfeld also brought his ability to speak the different dialects almost perfectly. Occasionally his magic also came into play. Basically, he wrote the script for the entire show himself.

music

The music took up about two thirds of the airtime. It appeared in several blocks, usually two potpourri blocks, one instrumental block for the dance orchestra , one block for the star guest and one operetta block. The orchestras of Max Greger and Hugo Strasser played as accompaniment . A potpourri was created by several, up to five singers who descended the show stairs one after the other. One block lasted about ten to fifteen minutes, the instrumental part was a little shorter. The ZDF ballet appeared in several blocks. The star guest was a well-known vocal artist like Caterina Valente , with whom Peter Frankenfeld exchanged a few words after his performance.

Radio broadcast

The pilot program was already broadcast on long and medium wave by Deutschlandfunk . From the output of 3 June 1978 was for Berlin and RIAS 2, the broadcast in stereophony .

Charity

In the course of time there were some Musik ist Trumpf records that were sold for 12.50 DM, of which 2.50 DM went to the German Cancer Aid . These records did not contain the music from the program, but were independent works. Occasionally the chairwoman of Cancer Aid, Mildred Scheel , was also a guest to thank you for the donations. However, charity took up a smaller space than with Forget-Me-Not , in particular there was no competition.

End of the Frankenfeld era

Frankenfeld fell ill shortly after the broadcast on August 26, 1978. Thereupon two programs were presented by colleagues, each of whom took on part of the moderation and expressed wishes for recovery.

Juhnke era

crossing

After Frankenfeld's unexpected death, Harald Juhnke took over the show, with Barbara Schöne as his assistant. Juhnke seemed almost made for it; however, because of his alcohol problems, there were more and more doubts as to whether the program would run properly.

End of the series

Before the Friday rehearsal for the broadcast on October 17, 1981 from Böblingen , Juhnke collapsed at the hotel bar and even had to be taken care of by a doctor. The ZDF let him fly home, justified the failure with the death of his father and announced the most beautiful in music is trump , with excerpts from the Juhnke era. This special broadcast had already been prepared for a failure. Elmar Gunsch and Barbara Schöne then presented the event in Böblingen , it was recorded and broadcast a week later, on Sunday from 3:25 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The broadcaster was then compelled to part with the showmaster. With the ZDF New Year 's Eve show New Year 's Eve Trumps on December 31, 1981, the still successful series “Musik ist Trumpf” ended for good.

Theme song

The theme song was composed by Heinz Gietz and originally came from the film Musik ist Trumpf, the Hazy Osterwald story from 1962. The Hazy Osterwald sextet sang the theme song at the time and released it on record. When the Hazy Osterwald Sextet was a guest on the broadcast of June 18, 1977, it sang the title itself with its original text:

Music is the key!
Music is the trump card for everyone!
You don't need to talk long
because the music confesses love for you.

Music is the key!
Music is the trump card in life!
It will always exist
as long as the globe is still turning.

In every small tropical bar
the pianist is king,
in every large musical hall
the big band plays its swing.

Music is the key!
Music is the trump card in life!
It will always exist
as long as the globe is still turning,
as long as our world exists.

For the television show, however, the composer Heinz Gietz recorded a cover version with his choir and orchestra , which started out with slightly different lines of text and ended up with no text:

Music is the key!
Music is the trump card for everyone!
You don't need to talk too long
because everyone understands the music immediately.

Music is the key!
Music is the trump card in life!
It will always exist
as long as the globe is still turning.

When you're having fun, it keeps you young
and you like the world that way!
When you are sad, it gives you momentum
and it makes you happy again!

Music is the key!
Music is the trump card in life!
It will always exist
as long as the globe is still turning,
as long as our world exists!

As long as the globe is still turning!
As long as the globe is still turning!
As long as our world exists!
Music is the key!
