Hot dogs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hot Dogs were a Munich Dixieland jazz band that had been popular with German and Bavarian folk songs in the New Orleans and Dixieland styles since the late 1950s . The band leader was Gerhard Sterr .

Career

The Hot Dogs were originally a Munich Dixieland jazz band, which became known throughout Germany primarily for their jazzed up Bavarian songs and other folk music. They were founded in 1955 by students from the Technical University (then Technical University , abbreviated to "TH") and students from Maximilians-Gymnasium as "TH Hot Dogs". The name was soon changed to "New Orleans Hot Dogs" to reflect the band's preferred jazz style. In 1966 the band had their first big success with Ja, so warn's, die alten Rittersleut . This song, written by Karl Valentin , was repeatedly expanded to include new, often immoral stanzas, which were varied from performance to performance. When the band became a professional band from around 1970, the short form "Hot Dogs" became a common name for the band. In 2004, after almost 50 years, the hot dogs broke up. This made them the most successful German Dixieland band, and their musicians are among the very few jazz musicians who could make a living from their music into retirement.

The main engine of the band from the beginning was the pianist Gerhard Sterr (died in October 2011 in Munich) with arrangements and own compositions as well as in business matters. It was also he who began early to bring Bavarian pieces ( Tölzer Schützenmarsch , Wildschütz Jennerwein ) into the band's repertoire, because many famous New Orleans jazz pieces, and not just those, had a similar origin, and thus created the Foundation stone for later success beyond the borders of Munich. With the professionalization of the band, he also formally became the band leader.

After the band broke up, their clarinetist and singer, Ludwig Niedermeier (who died in November 2010 in Tenerife), continued to lead the band as a Munich amateur jazz band with some alumni, under different band names, in which the "hot" was never missing.
