The old knights

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The old knights are a song by the Munich comedian Karl Valentin . He wrote it in 1939/40 as a contribution to his last theater project, the Ritterspelunke . The model was the knight ballad Ujeh, die alten Ritterleut by August Endres , first published in Klampf'n Toni in 1914. Valentin wrote new stanzas, simplified the refrain and composed a new melody. A radio recording was made on January 24, 1941, but it was only published on Telefunken after the war.

The song is well known in the recording of the Bavarian Dixie band Hot Dogs , which celebrated its first great success with it in 1966. The folk singer piece is a Gaudi song that has been sung a lot to this day and repeatedly serves as a parody basis for new lyrics. In 2008 Konstantin Wecker's song was featured on the occasion of the 850th anniversary of the city of Munich on his CD Gut'n Morgen Herr Fischer! released.
