Salvatore Adamo (born November 1, 1943 in Comiso , Sicily ) is a Belgian musician, songwriter , chanson and pop singer of Italian origin.

Life

When Adamo was four years old, his family moved to the Belgian coal mine in Mons , where his father found work. Since dual citizenship was not possible in Belgium , he kept Italian, according to his own admission, out of respect and in memory of his father. In addition to his school career, he sang in the church choir and learned to play the guitar .

In 1960 he released his first record in Belgium , having previously won a music competition in France. He soon played his compositions in German, even though he barely spoke the language. As early as 1966, a quarter of all Schlager records sold in France bore his name. A year later a tour also took him through Germany . He had his biggest hit in Germany in 1968 with Es geht ein Träne auf Reisen (the German version of Une larme aux nuages ), which stayed in the top 10 for 15 weeks and climbed to second place. In March 1969 he was on tour in Germany with the German singer Alexandra . She wrote the German text Walzer des Sommers for him, and Adamo composed and Alexandra wrote Kinderjahre . After Alexandra's death in 1969, Adamo recorded the song and released it in 1978.

In the 1970s, his LPs Kieselsteine , followed by Tilting - Kieselsteine 2 and Behind the Hearts - Kieselsteine 3 were characterized by demanding texts. Songs like dying in your arms , the hanged man , the fairies don't die , what else should I sing for you? and When you come back (translated by Reinhard Mey ) were successful translations of his French chansons. Kieselsteine also appeared on CD in the eighties , but only in a limited edition.

Since 2004

Adamo had to cancel his planned tour on May 28, 2004 and seek treatment for health problems. After almost a year of recovery, Adamo gave concerts in Belgium and France again. The first concert in this series, held in Mons, the city of his youth, attracted people from all over Europe and overseas. In 2007 Adamo took part in various music festivals in France and toured the country, as well as Belgium and the French-speaking part of Canada. In 2008 the CD Le bal des gens bien was released, on which 18 well-known and less well-known Adamo tracks were newly recorded. Adamo sings each song in a duet with a different artist from the French chanson scene. The CD was awarded platinum in Belgium and France after a few weeks . In November 2010 a CD was released with new French songs De toi à moi , on which a duet with his daughter Amélie T'aimer quelque part can be heard. For his 50th stage anniversary, Adamo toured Belgium and France in 2011 and also gave concerts in Athens, the Netherlands and Romania. This was followed by a successful tour through Chile (including at the Viña del Mar Festival, where the audience rewarded him with three prizes) and, after more than 40 years, the first concert again in Buenos Aires at the beginning of 2012. Throughout 2012 he gave various concerts. In November 2012 a CD with twelve new titles “La grande roue” was released. In 2013 Adamo turned 70 and celebrated the 50th stage anniversary. In November 2014 the CD Adamo chante Bécaud was released , on which Adamo does not sing his own French songs for the first time in his career, but chansons by Gilbert Bécaud. L'amour n'a jamais tort was released in 2016, Si vous saviez ... in 2018 , both again only with their own chansons.

Honors

Adamo is an honorary citizen of Jemappes and Montreal .
In 2002 the city of Mons honored him by making him an honorary citizen in a ceremony.
Since June 2, 2010 he has been an honorary citizen of Uccle , a municipality in the Brussels capital region where he has lived since the late 1970s.
